Makes sense. I don't use built-in sequencers. But good to know just in case I do get one in the future that insists on me using it.

The only time a synth needs MIDI clock is when it has a built in sequencer
you want to sync to the main sequencer. (In this case, QWS) A device is
either a master or slave, and there is some dancing around determining which
device works better as the master. (For example, an ADAT BRC is most often
the master for everything when it's involved because it makes a good master
but a poor slave)

Wow, that cleared up what midi clock was. So, it keeps multiple devices in
sync. So I would only use it when synths aren't following each other.
It doesn't sound like I'll be using it much then. Normally i only use one
synth at a time, and I'm careful about making sure measures and tempo don't
get too out of sync. If I have the above problem when I venture to include
multiple synths, i'll try and see if it helps. If not i'll just have to do
as best I can without. Am I understanding this right?

MIDI clock is one of the messages in MIDI known as System Real Time
messages, IIRC. What it does is simple -- it tells all devices reading it
the tempo and where the first beat of a measure is. It's used to
synchronize
multiple devices, like drum machines, ADAT's, and hardware sequencers.
It's
a less strict time code than SMPTE, but more strict and better implemented
than MIDI Song Position Pointer. It was one of the first big additions to
the MIDI specification, and may even predate the MIDI Sample Dump
Standard.

It's one of those things that you won't really think about it unless you
need it, and if you need it you really need it to get anything done. (Some
sequencers have ways around using it, but it's sequencer dependent and
often
not pretty)

Subject: QWS List midi clock?

Hi list,
Recently someone mentioned the midi clock, which I've never used. I don't
even know what it's for. The only thing I do know is that Bassmidi doesn't like it so I had to turn it off. So, can anyone explain what it is and how
it would be useful?
Thanks, and happy holidays!
