Hi James
Thanks so much. There other tools (utilities) that I think may be
of more use, more often.
For example: the option to choose a specific controller/event type,
and then on one screen see all occurences of that one event type/controller
from start to end in a song.
Or the option with an extra button on the progression tools,
to choose whether after inserting your progression, whether you
would like to return to the last setting for this event/controller type.
after the progression is inserted.
If you choose "yes", the program can scan back from the start position
for the progression to find the previous occurence of the same
event/controller type
and then just insert another event with that same value after inserting the
events for the progression.
Just want to say that I only used QWS for the
first time since last week and find it a pleasure to work with!
Thanks soooo much.
David

Hi,
Yes, the settings in the Track Properties dialog do basically insert
CC#7 and CC#10.
Regarding adding some more settings to this dialog, someone suggested
having an "Advanced" button in the box which could bring up some more
less-often used controllers. What do you reckon?
Hope this helps.
James.

You know, it might be handy to have a couple more user defined fields in
the
properties for controllers. Say a drop down list of controller numbers,
with
the ones already there not in the list to minimize problems. This would
be
handy for things like switching on Portamento and also setting the time,
two
different controllers, or setting starting expression.
Just a thought.

Hi folks,
Just a couple of points to add to this discussion which I hope are
helpful:
1. There is an important difference between a Progression of MIDI
controllers and what the Velocity Crescendo tool does:
* Progression will insert new MIDI events, for example Volume
controllers;
* The Velocity Crescendo tool will adjust the Velocities of existing
notes.
So, if you had a single sustained note and try and use the Velocity
Crescendo tool, chances are that nothing will happen because there's only
1
note.
2. MIDI Controllers Volume and Expression:
As far as I am aware, CC#7 (Volume) and CC#11 (Expression) normally
effectively have the same effect of changing the volume. If your synth
supports both of these controllers, then, as I understand it, you can use
CC#7 (Volume) to set the overall volume of each track, a bit like the
faders
on a mixer desk.
Then, if you want to adjust the volume (expression) within a track, use
CC#11 (Expression). This means that you can still use CC#7 to adjust the
overall mix and all the dynamics you put in with CC#11 don't need any
adjustment.
If I can use an analogy:
CC#11 is the musician's volume control on stage;
CC#7 is the sound tech's volume on the mixer console at the back.
Final tip: if you plan to use Expression within a track, make sure you
also
set the initial value at the start of the track. This has to be done
manually by adding an event, use either the Event List or Controller
Editor).
I hope this helps.
With best regards,
James.

Hi guys
I have found my problem.
The area I marked started after the start of the note, and it's one
long note running over several bars, so the velocity/crescendo tool
had no effect.
I had to use the progression tool with controller 7 and play around
with start and end volumes.
After that I muted these tracks, put on apply to all tracks and then
used the velocity/crescendo tool on the rest of the tracks.
Thanks so much for your help!!!!
I want to finish the dynamics on this piece, so I may run into another
challenge or two - this was the first hitch, but hopefully the last!

I haven't used the marker tools yet. What I'd do in that case is pick
one of the tracks not muted, then go to the start where you want your
volume change to start, and then hold down the shift key to select
the number of measures or other such data (change this in the zoom
function in the view menu) and with that selected, run the tool and
see if that does it.

Hi Nicole
Thanks for responding so promptly. I'm doing something wrong, it does
not work!!! here is what I did!
All tracks are at different volumes, so I need to use the percentage,
which means I am using the volume/crescendo tool!
I go to tools and check apply to all tracks.
I go to go to and clear all markers.
I go to the first beat (bar) of the region.
I set a left marker with shift-l.
I go to the last beat (bar) of my region.
I set the right marker shift-r.
Now I go to the start of my region by pressing l (go to marker).
I enter on select marked in the edit submenu.
I go to more tools in the tools menu.
I enter on velocity/cresendo.
I type a value of 70 (to create a decrescendo effect), and press OK.
When I play back nothing has changed.
I then go and look in events, expecting a series of events to be
present on the track, like you'll find for the tempo progression, but
there are no events inserted to change the volume.
What am I doing wrong?

Subject: RE: QWS List Question on volume manipulation
Let's see if I can make some sense of this for you.
QWS does some slightly strange things with controllers and other
messages, including note on messages. It uses its last value on a
track and doesn't chase any values from earlier like most other
sequencers do. So it is something of a chaotic thing to determine
where it will all fit in and what results you'll get.
This may or may not work, as this control works in most situations
but not some select others. Before performing your volume change,
click on the entry in the tools menu near the bottom that says,
"Apply to all tracks." This may give you the crescendo/decrescendo
you want on all tracks.
Either tool will do the job, depending on how you think about it.
Some folks are more comfortable with editing the volume or
expression controls, while others are more comfortable with the
crescendo percentage change. You should be able to calculate the
percentage you want depending on your initial volume you set for the
track in the properties, and if you have differing starting volumes
then I'd suggest that you use the percentage change tool to avoid
unpleasant things.
One more thing -- the apply to all tracks function ignores muted
tracks.
Use
this to your advantage.

Subject: QWS List Question on volume manipulation
Hi friends
Help please.
I'm doing my first piece using QWS.
To create crescendo/decrescendo effects in a piece with 16 tracks,
which tool should I use?
i've looked at the progression tool, controller 7, but it takes a
single chanel input and the specific start and end volumes.
There is no percentage plus or minus with this.
Then there is the velocity/crescendo tool, which takes a percentage,
but again, must I go to every track individually?
And after, say, the decresendo, must I then go and reset the volumes
on all chanels, or does the program automatically revert each
chanel's volume back to what it was before the decrescendo started,
or does each chanel continue on the volume at which it stopped after
the decrescendo:?
Hoping for some speedy help!
David
