well there are sertainly advantages in going software.
my new laptop toshiba is all touch.
saying that I can still u use the keyboard and
the software to interface with a lot of the touch
screens can be used without those screens and works quite well.

It's pretty simple -- touch screens allow the
controls to be done in software, which means
less product cost with how ubiquitous touch
screens have gotten. Knobs and buttons cost
money to create, even if they're just surface
panel controls instead of actual mechanisms.
Synthesizer and other keyboard manufacturers
have not indicated much interest in what end
users want beyond the ability to create sounds,
or at least play them back, for decades now. The
ones who really try to meet customer needs and
desires tend to be a bit more expensive, while
the lower end of the market is rife with
instruments that make the user accommodate the
instrument instead of the instrument
accommodating the user. (Nord, Hammond/Suzuki,
Kurzweil, and a few others are bucking this
trend, but they aren't cheap to buy)
I suspect this is one of the reasons why things
are moving toward software instruments.

I have this feeling five blind musicians aren't
going to make them change the interface, but you
never know! Roland's synthesizers all come with
touchscreen. Their new rack module doesn't, but
that too looks reasonably complicated. Korg's
Kronos and derivatives have touchscreens. The
Tyros 4, if I remember correctly, has a
touchscreen. Your phone probably has a
touchscreen. Seems to be working out well, or they wouldn't all do it.

Hi,
How does their record on accssibility suck? :S I
think their manuals in text version, their
non-wrapping menus etc are a hell of a lot more
accessible than for example the way Korg is
going with all their touch--based stuff ...I
wouldn't be surprised if Roland goes that way
with their high-end keyboards , if it hasn't already ...
