I have an Akai synth, 25 almost full size keys, that has a slot to slide an
iPhone 4 into. It interacts with the Akai SynthStation application. There
is a library available from Akai that could be used to develop a stand alone
application that could be accessible.
The audio quality on the Akai keyboard is REALLY good. It's got a nice pot
for precise level control and RCA outputs.
It's also a general USB Midi device so can be used with any DAW. I've used
it with QWS on a windows xp machine, but would sure enjoy using a fully
accessible QWS app on my iPhone while playing the Akai keyboard.

I am not sure what do you exactly mean in how Can you use the iPhone
as a synth... question.. Usually, qws will work with any midi USB
synths or even firewire (I have done some remote controlling with a
makie digital console ETC) . YOu can look up on the articles for using
vsts, and connecting other synths through virtual midi cables, but
until you can clarify I cannot be of further aid, unless there's
clearly something I'm missing or failing to understand.
