This thread has made me doubt the truth of that statement.

Seriously, if the only elements of a program that are rendered in the
English alphabet are keywords, I have serious reservations about my
ability to read the program.  Especially if there are subtleties in
the graphemes that I would not catch as someone unfamiliar with the
language in which the rest of the program is written.

If the variable naming effectively renders the programs
non-universally readable, what is the point of trying to formally
maintain that conceit.
