the idea of proof by contradiction.  So let's see...

1.  Lisp has had 50 years of vibrant innovation, highly productive programmers,
great advances in everything from practical storage allocation strategies to
theoretical computer science, all with a top level repl.

2.  The world view of Matthew Flatt and/or PLT and/or hygienic macros implies
that the top level is hopeless.

What can we conclude from these observations?
