We need binary I/O. Text and character I/O is only one kind
of data format, out of very many. It is no less important,
and no less instructive, to write programs that read, interpret,
modify, and write data in all the other formats, than it is to
write programs that read, modify, and write data in a text
format.
I don't want to go back to the bad old days of people doing
JPG or WAV or MP3 encoding in terms of an "extended ascii" character
set with meaningless buckybitted string constants for pass filters.
