Firmware is matched to the SBS software, whether it's SBS running on
mysqueezebox.com or on a local server. Sometimes -- not always, but
sometimes -- an old firmware won't work with a newer server version.
And that would hardly "improve the quality of the SB service in
general." That's why the fw upgrades/downgrades to match the SBS to
which it is connected.

If the up-down-up dance drives you crazy, you can either (a) upgrade
your SBS, or (b) don't upgrade your SBS, and only connect to mysb.com
via SBS, instead of explicitly disconnecting from your SBS and
connecting to mysb. You can get to everything that's on mysb via SBS.
