This could be stale information now, but five years ago when I moved to Australia I applied for jobs in Melbourne and Sydney and I got a lot more responses from Sydney than Melbourne.
I would recommend applying for jobs in both cities and see what bites you get. Usually companies are happy to do online interviews.
