Yes, I use Vipre on my home server and have no issues although I really do not use the server to run R:base; I use it mostly for storage and backup.

The only time I see a slowdown is when the daily scan takes place; this is why is scheduled for 4:00 AM. Have you added a list of extensions you want Vipre to ignore? This is pretty much the first thing I check (regardless of antivirus) when clients are having problems with the system slowing down. We are using the latest Vipre Antivirus 2013, version 6.9.5449.
