Another ancient trick to control your virtual memory is to fix the value. I run a 512
Mb RAM machine, 900MHz IBM ThinkPad, and the only crashes I get are when I put myself
into an infinite loop and have to zap it myself. I have fixed my virtual memory at
exactly 1024 Mb (MIN = 1024, MAX = 1024).

If you set your virtual memory to some reasonable amount like this, then immediately
defrag your hard drive, you will always have contiguous virtual memory, and Windows
does not have to manage the size of the swap file.

I have found over the years that this tweak to the systems (and in OS/2, Bill <g>) has
a small performance enhancement and a large reliability enhancement.

I have run several R:Base sessions, Outlook, Excel and Access simultaneously without
problems. Oh, yeah, I am on a network.
