Try:

SELECT RiderNum, FName, LName, MAX (RideMiles) as TotalMiles
FROM Rides WHERE GroupNumber=8 GROUP BY RiderNum, 
FName, LName

(unless you want SUM, but from you example, it looks like you wanted 
MAX)
