I am also of the Detto Pietro-leather hairnet generation. I still find cyclists being by-and-large very friendly and generous. Everytime I have a flat there will be several riders who stop to ask if they can be of help. Some are in fact very insistant about doing it for me. OK. I must say though that some intentionally friendly comments put my teeth on edge. Such as, "hang in there Pops" (kid on fixie cruising past with ipod blaring) or "Man, you're really moving" (subtext: for an old guy) or "you know, you're really good enough to get a good (carbon) bike" and on and on.
