My sense of things exactly, though of course rider + bike weight will very
much affect the judgment. Personally, I am delighted at how well the ~28 mm
Compass Elk Pass ELs perform on our acquia roads, as long as the very silty
surfaces are somewhat packed down, as ithey tend to be in cold
weather. And *mirabile
dictu,* with the EPs now installed on the gofast in place of the 22 mm
(actual) Michelin Pro Races, and with very light 8 oz Expedo spd clones in
place of the Keo Pluses, I can even ride my sub 18-lb Joe-built '99 custom
on these roads. Woo hoo!

But my God-willing-forthcoming "road bike for dirt" will be shod with
Furious Freds at 51 mm (with room for 60s), and I was glad of the 56 mm
Maxxi Ikons on the Race Lite this morning while riding through 3-4" of snow.
