I am not positive that the Rivendell bikes always follow this- but I think the Waterford frames have serial numbers that begin with a single letter, from [A-M] (excluding 'I') followed by 5 digits. The letter represents the month it was made, from A=January to M=December, with no letter 'I'. The first two digits are the year and the last three are the frame number for that month:
