To me a Rivish bike used to mean a highly engineered modern lugged steel frame that was meant for riding, not any type of competition use. The lugged thing has partially gone away, but the other still mostly holds.
I like Rivs because they disappear beneath me. No need to think about or compensate for the bike because it does what I expect it to do. I am a bit of a Retrogrouch in that I think most modern components are ugly. In general I don't like black components although I have black plastic Simplex derailleurs on one old bike and partially black Super Record derailleurs on another. I also like Rivs because I like to tinker with and build bikes. I only buy frames with the exception of the "long bike" Protovelo (Protopaloosa). Only the rear derailleur and crank that came on it remain at this point anyway. I tend to watch the frame specials and if something interesting and/or if a great deal on a frame size that fits me shows up, that becomes my next build - 40% off on a new 52 cm Bombadil at Thanksgiving a couple of years ago was too much to pass up. I hardly need another bike, but I have an NOS set of Campagnolo Nuovo Record Hi-Lo hubs that are screaming Frank Jones Sr. at me....
