Hopefully actual LA folks will chime in, but I'll start as a used-to-be LA guy: What most people commonly call "Los Angeles" is a vast area with every possible form of hill and flatland. In your shoes I wouldn't be inclined to venture into this strange and unpredictable area with one flashy gear; the beater 29er sounds like the ticket to me.
