There is an interesting
book called "Blue Zones" out there that is about that kind of

Dan Buettner is a local boy (Minneapolis- although he is very rarely here it seems) and a sort of adventure bike tourist, often accompanied by his brother. He from the northermost to southernmost places in the Americas in the 80s, SovietTrek(across the Soviet Union including hiking their bikes through about 100 miles of swamp in Siberia) after that, then AfricaTrek (north to south across Africa), then rode around South America visiting archeological sites (including interactive Internet connectivity with classrooms across the US- at one point, the students were setting the cycling agenda). He's connected bikes with classrooms with kids with interesting places in the world, which strikes me as pretty cool. Blue zones are his current interest.

He might be an interesting Riv Reader subject.
