Wingnuts of various designs were the standard race and upscale attachment device until Tulio had his epiphany on the alps and, as they lasted so long they must have worked. I think they were used with chain tugs, though. I wanted to try some without the tugs and bought a handful (not the VOs) but found that the threading was too small for the standard track axle.
