Whoa... After hearing all of the praise heaped upon the Silvers I thought I was the only one suffering this problem. Seeing the response here makes me feel less alone. I've been having severe difficulty shifting the rear of my AHH since day one (and I've been doing friction, and only friction, for years)... I was going to stop in at Riv to ask them to look at the shifter (since I've basically swapped every other part with my other bikes trying to find the source of my problem), but they were closed the Saturday that I was in the area for the Labor day holiday. I'm even more convinced now that I just ended up with a bad shifter. :-(
