Even mountain bikes are being spec'd with 10 speed these days. Ridiculous! But if your average recreational/sporting rider is buying a new road bike, it might as well be 10spd because that drivetrain is better supported in most shops. And even if it is more than what most people need, the new stuff works great and that counts too. I rode a new Ultegra 10spd drivetrain recently and was really impressed - fast and precise shifting. no fuss. Same experience with SRAM. And Campy.
