As Karen said, CC:DA does currently have a task force that is looking at RDA
chapter 3 ("Describing Carriers") and trying to formulate new ways to make the
physical description data more machine-actionable. We have done some initial
work online, and met at ALA in New Orleans, but have not come up with anything
definite yet.

said, we don't really have anything available yet that's ready to be made
public, although we'd like to have something definite by next Midwinter.

Peter, you will be happy to learn that there is an ALA group working
on this exact problem. I only attended my first meeting at the past
ALA, but I believe it is the "Task Force for Machine-Actionable Data
Elements in RDA" or some such. It is looking primarily at chapter 3 of
RDA where there are the whole variety of measurements for physical
description.
Perhaps someone here can give more info about the group and its goals.
