Good work all, and to Mr. Nelson for pursuing.  I am in the middle of two battery designs, and I am hoping our inspector doesn't make the same mistake. Now I can show this thread if so. Chris

Whew! That is a relief. Good for you for taking it to the next level. These inspectors can't keep claiming that the "industry is new." They need to get with the times!

I emailed and eventually spoke with the building inspector
supervisor and got him to agree that what they're looking for is
an AC disconnect, within sight of the ESS which disconnects and
locks open any connection to the house. He was going to reiterate
to his inspectors that it is not between the battery and the
    inverter.

True, but a suitable DC rated disconnect switch with large
enough terminals is going to be very expensive.

The whole thing boils down to the definition of an ESS. Getting
the inspector to realize that the 706.2 disconnect is not
required to be a*battery* disconnect is key here.

Fine stranded cables can be used with set screw terminals if

You hint at a broader point:  The industry is not providing
solutions that the regulators are demanding.  Any battery
with BMS should have a remote inhibit.  Problem solved.

The problem I see with just complying is that there is
really no practical or cost-effective way to comply. You
would have to somehow transition from battery cable to some
other cable type, because typical fusible disconnect switch
lugs are not going to be rated to accept
fine-stranded battery cable, especially in the required size.
