No doubt it would give a great lift, but there are many reasons why I think
it might be better to "sweep up" the niche and other markets first. Gunning
for the enterprise presents some challenges:

The majority of the enterprise market is ( on the desktop anyway ) 99%
windows and don't really need the cross platform benefits of RB.

Plus the existing IT tool space in the windows enterprise market are
basically fine , mature and "there" already ( VS, .NET, PowerBuilder, web
app dev tools, integration with modelling and source control systems).
That's an awful lot of bases to cover. Even just integrating with VC
systems wouldn't be enough by a long shot.

On thing I proposed to RS some time ago and still think might be a
beneficial thing to pursue is some arrangement whereby RS forms a
partnership with Sybase to help Sybase market an RB plugin version of their
Datawindows technology. After many enterprise developers dropped
PowerBuilder in favour of .NET and other tools, Sybase produced a special
version of the Datawindow control that can work in the Visual Studio .NET
ide. I am not going to even start to describe why Datawindows are so
powerful for enterprise IT, but suffice to say they are what made PB so
popular and productive for client-server and web based IT some years back.

PowerBuilder as a language and app builder is way behind REALbasic in both
language and performance terms, but it is the patented Datawindow technology
that switched many corporate VB people on to PB some years back. No other
technology addressing the same IT issues, to my knowledge covers so many of
the bases so well. ( I suggest anyone interested refer to the Sybase web
site or wikis if in any doubt )

In my knowledge Sybase as a policy deliberately choose to focus on Windows
and Windows Mobile as their platform ( ie Win32 etc ) and do not target
either Mac or Linux as desktop platforms. They stopped their Mac version of
PB long ago.

Given that PB is not so popular these days ( sadly many went over to java
and produced systems that cost more to deliver and ran much more slowly -
but hey - the contracting rates were great...) , Sybase might well be
interested in any way of extracting extra revenues out of the huge IP and
man years invested in Datawindows.

Hell, if I were Sybase, I'd buy RS !! - REALbasic + Datawindows would be a
winning ticket IMO..
