I'm not 100% positive, but I'm 70% positive that the wav format should work fine. It's an uncompressed format that's been around for a really long time. If you wanted to keep the size of audio files down and stay multiplatform you might look at Ogg. To further that end I'd suggest looking at Fmod, since someone, and I'm afraid I can't recall who offhand, did a wonderful job providing wrappers for the Fmod/FmodEx libraries. Fmod provides a lot more than Ogg, but Ogg is a great codec, IMHO.
