MP3 is pretty widely supported, but on Windows, it's played with DirectMedia instead of DirectSound. That brings a number of limitations, for example, you can't play multiple such sounds at once, and I don't think you can adjust the pan either. So for something like mood music it's fine, but for sound effects, WAV is a better choice.
