As I said I don;t use 3rd part plugins for the reasons previously  
discussed.

But I just checked the Einhugurs website and it does not meet all my  
needs either.

It says it can do it merging  horizontally but does not mention  
vertically (i often need both but horizontal is more important).

It does not mention being able to freeze rows and columns for  
scrolling purposes, which for me is often very important and i wind  
up kludging most often with less than optimal results.
