[26] Guardian on tv rights
---------------------------------
Posted Thursday, April 27, 2006 by ed:
'Two charismatic billionaires who have built their empires on flamboyant
gambles will today go head to head in a £2bn battle for the right to screen
live Premier League football matches.
Rupert Murdoch's BSkyB and NTL, the cable group in which Sir Richard Branson is
now the largest single shareholder following its purchase of Virgin Mobile,
will deliver sealed bids to the Premier League's central London headquarters.

For viewers it could mean a revolution in the way the game is covered and will
almost certainly lead to an increase in the amount they have to pay to watch
their team on TV from the beginning of the 2007-08 season.

Murdoch's Sky has become synonymous with live top-flight games since first
winning the rights in 1992. The billions it has poured into football have
transformed the sport's image and boosted the bank balances of players and
their agents to previously unimaginable levels.
But NTL is determined to take on Sky and sources confirmed yesterday it would
bid for at least half the 138 live games on offer. If it wins, one option would
be to withhold them from Sky's satellite service and market its cable offering
as the only place to see all of the games.

The auction has attracted more interest than ever before from a range of
bidders, including new entrants such as Irish broadcaster Setanta and
terrestrial services such as Channel 4 and Five hoping to return live
top-flight action to free-to-air television for the first time in 15 years.

Overseas giants such as Disney-owned ESPN and broadband companies such as BT
and France Telecom, able to compete for games on a level playing field for the
first time, have also registered an interest. The competition could drive the
overall price paid to more than £2bn once overseas rights, highlights and
mobile contracts are taken into account. The last auction in 2003 raised £1.6bn
in total.

Following a dispute over Sky's dominance the Premier League agreed with
European competition regulators that one broadcaster would not win all of the
games on offer.

As a result the league has split the 138 matches into six "balanced" packages
of 23 games each, with no broadcaster able to scoop more than five.

Sky will bid for all six in the hope of winning five while Setanta hopes to win
two packages. Channel 4 and Five will lodge speculative bids in the hope that
no other pay broadcaster will be interested in a lone package and they can pick
up 23 games on the cheap.

City analysts predict that Sky will pay whatever it takes to win five packages,
topping the £2.5m per game that it shelled out last time. The irony for
armchair fans could be that the intervention of the EC, designed to open up the
market and increase choice, could make matches more expensive to watch in the
long run.'

'DAVID MOYES, the Everton manager, is considering a bid to take Tim Howard on
loan from Manchester United next season amid uncertainty over the future of
Nigel Martyn.
Martyn has not played since Everton’s FA Cup fourth-round tie at home to
Chelsea on January 28, after which he had surgery on a fractured ankle, and
while the 39-year-old hopes to be given the all-clear by specialists in the
next few days, Moyes is unsure whether to offer him a new contract.

Instead, he is contemplating signing a younger goalkeeper on loan, with Chris
Kirkland, who is out of favour at Liverpool, another possible target once his
loan spell at West Bromwich Albion ends.

While Liverpool might be unwilling to help out their fierce rivals by loaning
them Kirkland, Sir Alex Ferguson is understood to be open to the idea of
allowing Howard to spend a season with another Barclays Premiership club to
gain more first-team experience.

The American made 44 league appearances in his first two seasons at Old
Trafford after his move from New York/New Jersey MetroStars in July 2003, but
he has been restricted to only 45 minutes of Premiership action since Ferguson
signed Edwin van der Sar from Fulham last summer.

The goalkeeping situation at Old Trafford is intriguing, with Van der Sar not
expected to stay beyond the end of his two-year contract next summer. Howard,
despite struggling to live up to his early promise, remains a contender to
succeed the Holland goalkeeper in the long term, but the 26-year-old’s
development has stalled and he would benefit from playing regularly again next
season.

United also have high hopes for Ben Foster, who was signed from Stoke City last
season and immediately went on loan to Watford, where he has made a big
impression, and several of their younger goalkeepers.

Depending on their plans for Foster, whom Watford wish to keep for another year
regardless of whether they are in the Premiership or the Coca-Cola Championship
next season, United may try to sign another goalkeeper in the summer.

Ferguson and his staff have considered Lukasz Fabianski, a 21-year-old from
Legia Warsaw, but are thought to favour a more experienced candidate to cover
for Van der Sar, particularly if Howard and Foster go on loan next season.'

[24] Daily Record on Keane testimonial
---------------------------------
Posted Thursday, April 27, 2006 by ed:
'MANCHESTER UNITED will erect a tented village to cope with the thousands of
Celtic fans attending what is being billed as Seville Mark II.

Police will also sanction the sale of alcohol at the ground for almost eight
hours before Roy Keane's Testimonial next month.

The travelling legions will officially be registered as 25,000 - the number of
tickets United have sent north. But with thousands more English-based Hoops
suporters snapping up tickets as well, it's possible Celtic could outnumber
their hosts.

The game between Keane's current and former clubs on May 9 is expected to earn
the Irishman a £2.5million pay-day.

The attendance will set a new British record for the number of visiting fans
attending a match and it's the biggest mobilisation of Celts supporters since
the UEFA Cup Final in Seville three years ago.

A giant marquee - the Fanzone - will be opened next to the North Stand at Old
Trafford and will serve food, alcohol and show football DVDs on giant screens
from noon until kick-off. The £5-a-head Fanzone will open again after the
match.

The Fanzone has been used at other United games this season without any
problems and Greater Manchester Police don't expect this match to be any
different.

The facility mirrors the efforts made by authorities in Andalucia to
accommodate the 80,000 Hoops fans who travelled to Seville for the UEFA Cup
Final against Porto in May 2003.

Another record may fall at the game. Earlier this month Old Trafford was filled
with 70,908 fans for the match with Arsenal, a Premiership record.
But it is also possible this figure could be beaten by the visit of Celtic. '

[23] Telegraph on tv rights bids in by today
---------------------------------
Posted Thursday, April 27, 2006 by ed:
'Bids for the Premier League's six live television rights packages are due in
by 2pm today and, although a decision could be made by this evening, it looks
likely there will be a second round next week.

Sky remain favourites to land five of the six available packages of 23 games
and are rumoured to be preparing strong bids for all six, leaving the Premier
League to decide which one to take away from them.

That remaining package looks most likely to go to Irish pay TV operator Setanta
though NTL have held a board meeting to discuss how their new Virgin TV
enterprise could challenge Sky by securing some Premiership rights.
Surprisingly, Channel 4 are expected to bid and are hopeful of picking up a
package on the cheap.'

'

'WAYNE ROONEY'S new-found maturity has been impressing his team-mates off the
field as well as on it, after rescuing the club's party night last week.

Several players had already had to apologise to fellow diners in a Manchester
restaurant for their rowdy behaviour before the party moved on to their
favourite haunt of the Panacea nightclub.

As the night wore on, one senior international was causing consternation among
the staff by making lewd suggestions to female partygoers and pinching their
bottoms.

But before they felt the need to interject, it was a sober Rooney who lectured
the player and gave him a very public hairdryer treatment.

The party continued after an apology from the senior star in question and a
brief round of applause for the England striker's stance.'

Football banning order

I wonder if you can help. I am a solicitor in Shrewsbury who is defending a
Manchester United fan who was arrested for being drunk and disorderly on the
train from Cardiff to Manchester after the Carling cup final by British
transport police. The Crown prosecution Service also want to impose a three
year football banning order on my client despite him having no previous
football related convictions. My client has pleaded not guilty to the drunk
and Disorderly and we are fighting the football banning order as it is totally
disproportionate to the crime and believe that the CPS are only pursuing such
a course due to it being world cup year. If possible I would like to hear
from any Manchester united fans that were on the 1803 train from Cardiff to
Manchester and their experiences of travelling on the train, i.e. was everyone
happy and was alcohol being consumed. If any fans could help I would like to
take a statement from them and if necessary ask them to give evidence at my
client's trial. Two people on this train were arrested for very minor
offences and have had the threat of a football banning order placed on them.
It is important that we fight such Draconian applications by the CPS which
could affect all football fans in this would cup year. My own credentials are
that I am a Wolverhampton
wanderers season ticket holder so had the pleasure of watching wayne rooney
and co this season.

If you can help in any way by publicising this in any way I would be very
grateful. If you need any further information please call me on 01743 237118

Thank you

'Darren Fletcher is not suffering from a knee injury as had been reported on
Wednesday.

Reports suggested that the 22-year-old midfielder had been ruled out of
Scotland's friendlies with Bulgaria and Japan next month in the Kirin Cup
tournament in Japan.

But Fletcher has trained all week with United's first-team at the Reds'
Carrington training base.

The confusion arose because Scotland boss Walter Smith was under the impression
that Fletcher had been injured.

"I thought Darren had suffered a bad knee injury but I am led to believe that
he is back in training now and he could actually come to Japan with us,” Smith
said.'

[18] Reserve Report by Pete
---------------------------------
Posted Thursday, April 27, 2006 by ed:
Boys are Men

Last night the Manchester Senior Cup was won by a team comprising mostly
juniors. It was a splendid performance by our boys (plus No57) against a much
more experienced Oldham Athletic side. It has to be said, though, that towards
the end I was worried that we were going to 'snatch defeat from the jaws of
victory'!

It was a 'mild', 'spring' night in Oldham and the temperature was threatening
to rise above freezing. We'd been before, of course, so the old adage 'Don't
cast a clout 'til May is out' was applied. In Oldham for 'May' you can read
'August' and that only on a very, very good day.

We showed almost straight away when Steele collected and launched a good throw
out to Mullen. He sped down the wing, played a one-two with Rossi and went into
the box. His good shot was well saved. Four minutes later Rossi went into the
box, beat a man and surprised everybody by shooting with his right foot.
Unfortunately the ball hit the inside of the post, rolled across the line and
came out.

They might have opened the scoring on twenty-one when a cracking shot rattled
the crossbar and rebounded about thirty yards. Marsh picked up and hit a
wonderful long ball to Campbell. He drove into the box, inside-left, beat a man
on the outside before looking up to see Rossi unmarked. A very unselfish square
ball gave Rossi a simple tap-in and we were one up. So from being almost one
down we were in front and the confidence began to flow.

On the half hour Markus played a hopeful cross into the box and this was
bundled out to the feet of Rossi. He stumbled, then controlled, then stumbled,
then shot wide. Seven minutes later Rossi collected a ball out of defence and
fed Mullen. The very promising, and uncomplicated, winger went right to the
bye-line and as Ian said the immortal line "If only this lad could cross with
his left foot", he crossed beautifully with his left peg to the far post and
Campbell, having timed his run perfectly, headed in, off a defender's shoulder,
for two-nil.

With a couple of minutes remaining in the half Markus picked up the ball about
ten yards in their half, inside-right, went forward and curled a quite
magnificent cross into the box which landed on the penalty spot. Campbell, once
again making a quite wonderful run, was able to beat the defence and side-foot
into the net. Three-nil and we were cruising. Just on half-time a very poor
back pass was sliced into the air by their goalie and Rossi pounced. He had
time to go around the goalie and tap-in, but chose to go for the 'clever'
option, the chip over, and the goalie saved quite easily. We all agreed that
the chance should have been taken and were very worried that it might come back
to haunt us. We were right to be worried!

Half-time and we had totally dominated the game. A four or five goal lead would
not have flattered us. Oldham Athletic had been blown away by our devastating
young lads. But the second half was to be a different story. Perhaps their
manager talked to them about 'pride' we will never know but something changed
in their approach and attitude.

We started the second as we had finished the first with a good move involving
Markus. He collected a ball from the left wing, inside-right, jinked past a man
and shot hard and low just inside the near post. The goalie, who must have seen
it late, saved very well for a corner which came into the box and all
twenty-two players had a lash at it. In the end Rossi half hit a shot at goal
which was easily saved.

On fourteen Mullen again showed and went down the wing before feeding into
Campbell. His excellent shot was well saved but rebounded out to Rossi who's
shot was again well saved. Then a few moments later Mullen chipped the ball
over the top for Rossi to run on to but his shot was wide.

On nineteen minutes the game took on a different complexion. An innocuous cross
found our defenders away on holiday and their lad had a 'thank-you-very-much'
tap-in. All of a sudden they looked transformed and we looked like the young
boys were/are. That said we might have added to our total when Rossi was fouled
on the edge of the box and the resulting free-kick, taken by the wee man
himself, was very well saved.

On twenty-six we made a double substitution. Phil Marsh and Richard Jones went
off to be replaced by John Evans and Darren Gibson. Then within five minutes
they forced a corner which came in and found our defenders having a Trade Union
meeting near the halfway line. Their lad headed in. Three-two. Bums became
'twitchy'. Their no-marks suddenly found a voice and we were 'treated' to
various ABU songs.

With about ten minutes to go No57 was substituted by David Grey. Then Gibson
hit a wonderful ball over the top for Markus. His cross was headed away for a
corner which came to nowt. They continued to press, we stayed resolute in
defence. As had been the case last Saturday, watches began to be studied as we
awaited the final whistle. Ian reckoned that the referee played fourteen
minutes of extra-extra time! The game ended with us a bit shell-shocked but
victorious.

Once again this season our young boys had acquitted themselves quite
wonderfully. We had been so superior in the first half that the older and more
mature Oldham fans sat behind us were embarrassed. I could hear their
exasperation turn through desperation to real anger at their team's inept
display. The second half was a slightly different story. That said if Rossi had
concentrated on the job in hand, rather than showing off, we would have gone in
four up at half time and the game would, without doubt, have been over.

For the presentation we expected at least a platform and fireworks but we got a
small table and a purple shroud. One 'wag' asked aloud if it had been bought in
expectation of the beloved Mr Glazer's demise, but Gill, sat in the 'posh'
seats did not confirm or deny this fact. As the trophy was lifted that majority
in the (disappointedly small) crowd roared their satisfaction. Let us hope the
same will be heard on Sunday at Wrexham.

Keep the faith, Pete

'Reserves boss Rene Meulensteen admits he was concerned by the Reserves' nervy
Manchester Senior Cup final win over Oldham Athletic.

The Reds secured their first trophy under the Dutchman with a 3-2 win, but were
left hanging on after leading by three goals at half-time.

"I was pleased with the win and I don't want to take anything away from that,
but it was needless to get in that situation. It was a little bit of a shame,"
Rene told ManUtd.com.

"They did really well in the first half and met every target we set them. We
set ourselves certain targets, because if you want to score goals and get so
many shots in then people tend to focus on the performance.

"We did that in the first half but then two stupid goals let them back into the
game. We should have had another two or three goals in the first half because
they played some really fantastic football."

United may still require a point from their Sunday trip to Liverpool to seal
the title. Should the Reds retain the league, Spurs await in the national
Reserve League Playoff.

With that in mind, Meulensteen had his players report to training on Wednesday
morning.

He said: "I don't want to spoil the feelgood factor but I wanted to highlight a
couple of things that could be crucial in the next one or two games. I told
them that they can't just hide behind the win.

"I asked them to mark themselves out of 10 for their performances in both
halves. Most of them awarded eights or nines for the first half, then for the
second half it was mainly fives. That's a disastrous drop in performance in a
final.

"We've done fantastically all season, now let's see if we can take it two steps
further. If we do then it would be all credit to the boys because they deserve
it."

be a fantastic season with back-to-back titles which has not been done by
Chelsea before. We've been working hard in training this week. Last Saturday is
gone and now all we can do is achieve the remarkable feat of putting
back-to-back titles together, and we can do that against United. Everybody has
looked good in training this week. It's going to be a big game in Chelsea's

[10] Sportinglife on Wallace
---------------------------------
Posted Thursday, April 27, 2006 by ed:
(you can still read the RN interview with him in the current RN124)

'Former Manchester United winger Danny Wallace insists he has nothing but happy
memories from his football career.

The 42-year-old was a star for United in the late 1980s when multiple sclerosis
first began to cause him problems that were not fully diagnosed until the
mid-1990s.

The condition, which affects the nervous system, has made walking difficult for
a man who used to rely on his pace to beat opponents.

But he remains undaunted and is currently still competing in the London
Marathon, aiming to complete a 26-mile course by the end of the week to raise
cash for his charity foundation as well as awareness of MS.

Wallace insisted: "I had 15 great years of first-class football. I played for
England - and scored one goal on my debut - and I won a few medals as well. I
had a good career so I can't complain."

Wallace, who famously played alongside younger brothers Rod and Ray for
Southampton before leaving for Old Trafford, helped Sir Alex Ferguson to his
first trophy at the United helm, the 1990 FA Cup.

But while the veteran Scot went on to amass an enviable silverware collection,
Wallace's own career was affected as MS took hold and within two years of
leaving United he found himself an unsuccessful trialist at Mansfield having
endured a frustrating stint at Birmingham.

Yet the condition had remained a mystery for many seasons.

He said: "The reason nobody knew it was MS was because I was getting a lot of
injuries which were everyday injuries that footballers get, like calf and
hamstring injuries and a little bit of back pain.

"So I never knew until I went to a specialist and had it diagnosed. I might
have had it six years before it was diagnosed but the symptoms didn't come out
until a lot later when I was playing for Birmingham."

Wallace, who is a grandfather and lives in Manchester, has had to take regular
rest periods as he makes his way towards the finishing line opposite Buckingham
Palace that most competitors passed on Sunday in a matter of hours.

But Wallace has had help from a man who had already achieved a similar feat in
a previous marathon, former boxer Michael Watson, who suffered severe brain
damage in a middleweight title fight with Chris Eubank in 1991.

Watson joined Wallace, who can be sponsored on the dannywallacefoundation.org
website, at Canary Wharf yesterday and helped him reach the 16-mile mark.'

[5] Important for news from May 8th-12th
---------------------------------
Posted Thursday, April 27, 2006 by ed:
As our final RN of the season (125) is out for the Charlton game and ONLY
available for one league game (instead of 2, 3 or 4), we obviously need to make
sure we sell above average for one day to make up for lost readership for not
having extra selling days.

Though we know you love the website - and news - it is the mag which is the
backbone for the whole RN 'foundation' and as such, for the news for Monday May
8th through to Friday May 12th, you will ONLY be able to get the news for that
day, as it happens and throughout that day, if you help us and buy a mag either
at the Charlton game or in advance by mail order here.

The news will then be contained in our VIP forum for each day - and you can
gain access (current subscribers, etc are in there for a year and will remain
so) if you are not already by being put in there if you order the mag here in
advance - or by giving us the password when you buy it at the Charlton game
which will relate to a question from the mag (which we'll let you know what to
do nearer the time). Buy or pre-order the mag and entry to the VIP area is FREE.

For those who are never going to buy the mag, and always 'just lurk' you will
be given Mondays news here as usual...but on the Tuesday, and so on and so on
until the Saturday - which will be the Friday news! We realise some will go
elsewhere but it's an important/vital way of helping us, and giving us
something back...in return for you getting what we think is a great read in the
bargain (the mag) and of course news as it happens. The most extensive United
news on the web? We think so!

You can order mag 125 here, and if you're not already a member of the forum
just visit http://rnforum.co.uk/phpBB2/index.php
http://rnforum.co.uk/phpBB2/index.php and sign up and we'll do the rest.

[4] MEN on Wallace
---------------------------------
Posted Thursday, April 27, 2006 by ed:
FORMER United winger Danny Wallace insists he will complete the London Marathon
by the end of the week.
The 42-year-old former Southampton and England star has multiple sclerosis, the
debilitating condition which means he can only walk the 26-mile course and must
take regular rest spells to combat severe fatigue.

Wallace, who had clocked up 15 miles by this afternoon to reach Canary Wharf,
is hoping to complete the remaining 11 miles by Friday but knows it could be
longer.

But if that means he will raise MS awareness, then the gruelling journey, which
has seen his unsteady legs send him toppling to the tarmac on more than one
occasion, it will be worth it.

He said: "I'm hoping to finish on Friday but it doesn't matter when I finish
just as long as I do. So if it is Saturday that will be fine.

"To tell you the truth it has been easier than I expected. Don't get me wrong,
it has been tough and my legs are very tired but I have done 15 miles now and
am raring to go for the last 11.

"I'm more than halfway now so it is all downhill now. I have got to Canary
Wharf so I can push on a bit.

"The support has been absolutely brilliant. We have been getting cars coming up
to us and donating. We even had Frank Maloney stopping people to get donations."

Boxing promoter Maloney had been joined by another figure from the fight game,
former middleweight champion Michael Watson.

And Watson, who famously defeated Nigel Benn in 1989, knows more than most what
Wallace has been going through as he had struggled to complete the 2003
marathon, long after his career was ended in 1991 when he suffered brain damage
in a title joust with Chris Eubank.

Watson was convinced Wallace would realise his latest goal.

He said: "I have been confident all the way.

"It's all about self-belief. It's all mental. All things are possible if you
believe in yourself - and he does. So he has done the marathon already. He has
crossed that line before he had already started."

Wallace, who lives in Manchester, has set up the Danny Wallace Foundation to
raise money and awareness about MS and donations can be made via the
dannywallacefoundation.org website.

He said: "A lot of people don't know much about the disease and to tell you the
truth I don't either. The type I have is spinal MS, which affects the right
side of my body.

"There are two forms of it. One is really aggressive and attacks the brain and
the other the central nervous system. It is a terrible disease.

"I have just set up my foundation and we haven't really put a limit on how much
we expect to get. As long as we raise awareness and raise as much money as
possible the marathon will be a good start for us."

Wallace is unlikely to finish last in a race which was completed by most
competitors on Sunday.

Another entrant is also still going - the man dressed in a suit of armour and
towing a large dragon to commemorate St George's Day.

Wallace said: "We left him way back at Greenwich. He's doing really well. He's
pulling a lot of weight too so my message to him is `Keep it up mate'."

Danny Wallace is taking part in the London Marathon - help by sponsoring him.

RN recently interviewed Danny Wallace and we're delighted to offer our support.
You can too. Just log on to http://www.dannywallacefoundation.co.uk/

multiple sclerosis and sponsor Danny in the Marathon where we wish him all the
very best.

[2] Vidic happy

Posted Thursday, April 27, 2006 by ed:
"I am happy now and getting better with every game. It was not easy for me in
those first matches. I did not feel good. It was a new country and a new club
and the first two months were very difficult for me. I am working hard and I
will be a better player next season. I am not thinking too much about the
competition there is for places. I have a good relationship with the other guys
who all help me. I am just trying to stay in the side and show that I have some
qualities. The league is quick and physical and you have to adapt but this is a
good chance for me in England."

[1] BBC on England job
---------------------------------
Posted Thursday, April 27, 2006 by ed:
'Luiz Felipe Scolari has been offered the job of England manager and is
discussing terms with the Football Assocation, the BBC has learned.
FA chief executive Brian Barwick was in Lisbon on Wednesday to thrash out a
deal with Portugal's Brazilian coach.

"We were speaking to Felipe as part of the process of recruiting the next coach
and that process continues," said Barwick after flying back to London.

Scolari, 57, is out of contract after the 2006 World Cup finals in Germany.'
