[37] This Site can only survive with YOUR support
---------------------------------
Posted Friday, May 26, 2006 by ed:
We'll keep this short as we know some tire of our long requests.

The simple fact of the matter is that though this is a free United news
service, we CAN'T SURVIVE without covering costs, let alone hoping to develop,
grow and update one day with your support and backing!

We hope you like what we pride ourselves on being one of the best - continually
updated by a team of volunteers and contributors - news sites for United news
on the net. As well of course as the longest serving Utd fanzine (now 19 years
old! scary!).

But unless YOU support US, Red News will not survive. RN wishes everything ran
on free air, trust us we do. But it doesn't. And we can't. We NEED YOUR HELP to
survive. To keep providing this news day in, day out and producing our main
focus - the fanzine. We're not after a major amount, not a pint of your blood,
less in fact than a pint of beer costs a month. Ideally we'd like you to take
out a subscription if you can't buy the mag at OT. £25 for a years mag AND free
web news to boot as well as entry to our VIP Forum. That is very cheap. But
buying a mag, or using our sponsors (at the bottom of the page) helps. Our very
survival always depends on you.

We had online hits from over 60 countries recently. But subscribers in only 12
of those. And that just a handful That's not a moan at our foreign readership,
we realise there are difficulties, we realise too that home or abroad people
will just look away now. But please take these appeals seriously. Hits on this
site (where we don't get a penny for) far, far outweigh fanzine readers.

One simple question - if we weren't around, of course you'll get United news,
but do you think it would be as substantial as RN provides - EVERY DAY? YOU
would miss out. And so would we...

We love the way some of you interact with the fanzine, and site, sending
e.mails to [EMAIL PROTECTED], contributing, sending gossip, stories, info and
helping with appeals. Thanks to all our loyal supporters. Who continue to stand
by us. And it's never too join in or too late to help us!

Every little helps, nothing is too small an effort, and please understand why
we have to continually ask as we run a growing 365 a day news website news and
forum service, and fanzine, especially as more and more people use this site.
We are a very - and we mean very - small operation (with hopefully a loud
voice!), not run from any headquarters, but just a bunch of United supporters
providing news and comment and giving our readers a voice.

100% Independent. 100% Unofficial. Let's keep it that way.

[36] Barthez caught in France row
---------------------------------
Posted Friday, May 26, 2006 by ed:
from Guardian

'France's preparations for the World Cup finals have been hampered after a
teambonding exercise at their alpine retreat near Tignes ended with the Lyon
goalkeeper Grégory Coupet threatening to quit the squad following a blazing row
with the manager, Raymond Domenech, in front of the rest of the squad.
Coupet, who was already smarting at Domenech's decision to make the 34-year-old
veteran Fabien Barthez his No1 for the tournament in Germany, was furious after
the Marseille goalkeeper was allowed to abandon the team's ascent of the Grande
Motte glacier on Wednesday after complaining of a sore calf muscle.

At the time Barthez was roped to the defenders Eric Abidal and Lilian Thuram,
together with a member of the backroom staff, and Domenech agreed to allow him
to descend to the team's hotel alone fearing that the crampons he was wearing
might aggravate the injury.
The rest of the squad completed the climb but, having returned to their
mountain refuge at 3,000m for lunch, Coupet made his feelings clear, much to
the embarrassment of the other members of the squad and their families. The
33-year-old complained that Barthez had previously been training without
mentioning his sore left calf and implied that the former Manchester United
goalkeeper was receiving special treatment.

The row escalated with Coupet returning to the squad's four-star hotel, packing
his bags and leaving the retreat with his wife and children in his Mercedes
A-class. He was back some 45 minutes later, having been called on his mobile by
the fitness coach Robert Duverne and his club chairman at Lyon, Jean-Michel
Aulas. He was eventually persuaded to return to the hotel, though his
relationship with Domenech appears to have fractured beyond repair.

The coach was putting a brave face on the furore yesterday. "Grégory Coupet had
the blues for a moment. He cracked," he said. "That can happen because, when it
comes to a World Cup finals, it's a stressful time for everyone. He drove off
but came back again pretty quickly and we're getting on with it. He gave me an
explanation which I accepted and, as far as I'm concerned, it's water under the
bridge now. He's a great goalkeeper and the incident's behind us. You have to
understand that the France team is more important than the interests of any
individual. The problem has been sorted."

France would have been unable to replace Coupet had he refused to return
because, under Fifa's rules, replacements can only be called up to the 23-man
squad due to injury. Coupet's discontent has been simmering since Domenech made
it clear that his first choice throughout most of his reign as national coach
would not be his No1 at the finals and the two goalkeepers barely exchanged a
word during training yesterday.'

"I think the ones that are here have got that motivation that is why they're
still here. They still believe they can achieve something great for the
country. They're going to fight for their lives also because it's going to be
their last World Cup so they want to achieve something with the young players
who have joined the team recently. I don't think the media put us in that
situation [named as favourites]. We accept that if we can be in peace to be
ready and perform well, it's good. I think England are going to be one of the
most dangerous teams in the World Cup to win the title - even if they're
struggling up front. It's true they need goalscorers and it's going to be
difficult without Wayne [Rooney] but they're going to manage to qualify and I
hope he's going to join England later."

[33] Barca unhappy with English clubs poaching their players

Barcelona president Joan Laporta

"We are a club that has invested seven million euros (around £4.8million) in
our youth team this season. But we have a big problem with English clubs who
are targeting our youngsters. Before they used to do it with French clubs and
now it seems as though we are next. The problem is that English clubs don't
have their own youth system and so they have to find players elsewhere. The
British clubs offer astronomical figures to kids who are 14, 15 and 16, a
figure that for ethical reasons we cannot equal. We had this situation with
Cesc Fabregas, Gerard Pique and now with Fran Merida."

'WAYNE ROONEY is braced for 48 hours of critical and probably tense talks
between Manchester United and the Football Association that could determine
whether he plays any part in this summer’s World Cup finals.
The 20-year-old forward hoped that a scan yesterday morning would result in him
being given the green light to join the England squad next week, but the
results were inconclusive and will be debated by medical experts at Old
Trafford and the FA today and tomorrow. There was no firm news as Sven-Göran
Eriksson arrived in Reading to oversee a 2-1 defeat by Belarus in last night’s
B international and the head coach admitted that he had not yet spoken to
anyone from United. “It is important to wait until the doctor looks at the scan
in the morning,” he said.

The lack of obvious encouragement may serve to dampen some of the optimism that
has arisen since Rooney suffered a fractured metatarsal on April 29, but the
player has been working hard in the belief that he could return in time for the
knockout stages or even against Sweden on June 20 in England’s last match in
the group stage.

While Rooney continued his rehabilitation in the North West, his team-mates
were losing to Belarus on a night when the result was far less relevant than
the fact that Michael Owen came through 62 minutes unscathed — his longest
appearance since the curse of the metatarsal struck him on New Year’s Eve. “He
seems to be very fit and does not feel anything after the game,” Eriksson said
of the Newcastle United striker.

However, Robert Green, the Norwich City goalkeeper, was almost certainly ruled
out of the World Cup when he ruptured a groin taking a goalkick six minutes
after coming on for David James at half-time. He was replaced on the pitch —
and no doubt in Eriksson’s squad for Germany — by Scott Carson.

While upset for Green, Eriksson will have been pleased that senior players such
as Owen, Sol Campbell and Ashley Cole could gain some match fitness. The latter
pair played for the entire 90 minutes and there was also the first sight of
Theo Walcott for much of the country, including the England head coach. “I
think he showed that he can handle it,” Eriksson said.

The Swede now moves on to some delicate discussions with United, who are known
to be concerned about the idea of Rooney going to Germany if less than fully
fit. At the present rate of progress, he is believed to be two weeks away from
resuming full training, but the FA must attempt to convince United that such a
prognosis is good enough for him to travel.

The sensitivity of the situation was reflected in the remarkable lengths to
which United went to keep yesterday’s developments under wraps.

Rooney, having left his home in Cheshire at 8.30am, was smuggled in through a
service door at the BUPA hospital in Whalley Range, Manchester, at 11.40 and
left under a similar veil of secrecy an hour later, again evading the assembled
media thanks to an elaborate decoy that involved his Chrysler car being parked
at the front while he was driven away in another vehicle.

The scan was overseen by Tony Gill, a little-known figure among United’s
medical staff who has suddenly found himself thrust into the spotlight after
the abrupt departure of his colleague, Mike Stone, this week. Stone parted
company with United after a series of disagreements with Sir Alex Ferguson and
Carlos Queiroz, the manager’s assistant.'

'Chelsea are 9/4 from 8/1 to offer Ruud Van Nistelrooy a port in a storm,
according to bookmakers Ladbrokes. The Dutch striker looks to have burnt his
bridges at Old Trafford after a series of rows with manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

And following speculation that officials from the Stamford Bridge club met his
representatives on Wednesday they are now favourites to sign him. Ladbrokes
spokesman Robin Hutchison said: "Few people have questioned Ferguson and got
away with it - just ask Jaap Stam and David Beckham - so it looks like he's on
his way.

"I can't believe United would want him to go to Chelsea, but they're one of the
few clubs who can write the cheque without thinking about it. Eidur Gudjohnsen
going in the other direction would also soften the blow too."

Following their disappointing defeat against Villarreal in the Champions
League, Inter Milan are 5/2 second favourites to land Van Nistelrooy.

Ladbrokes make him 5/1 to stay at United, 6/1 to join former team-mate David
Beckham in the Bernabeu and 9/1 to sign for AC Milan.'

[29] Antwerp on loan deals

Antwerp club secretary Paul Bistiaux

"Once again it has been a fantastic exercise and the boys have enjoyed it.
Their development as players has been dramatic. Unfortunately we missed the
promotion play-offs by one point but it has been a great experience. Sylvan
Ebanks-Blake did exceptionally well when he played, and scored some important
goals for us. But unfortunately he was injured at one stage. Adam Eckersley is
going to go far. He has been excellent at left-back. He has played in every
game for us since he came over in January. He's very professional, very
thorough and quick and clever on the pitch. Sadly, goalkeeper Tom Heaton didn't
get a decent chance for us. We were struggling with our goalkeepers in
mid-season. They were all off form and so we brought Tom over. But our keepers'
attitudes seemed to change once he arrived and they started playing really
well. Lee Martin played 15 games for us. He was man of the match in about seven
of them and did enough to win our player of the season award! Our fans adored
him and they made up songs as tributes to him. Danny Simpson is very young but
very promising. His development in Belgium has been dramatic. He arrived as a
boy but left as a man."

[28] Daily Mail on Rooney
---------------------------------
Posted Friday, May 26, 2006 by ed:
'Manchester United and the Football Association were heading for a showdown
last night after a scan revealed that Wayne Rooney remains weeks away from
returning to action.

Rooney went for a scan on his broken right foot in Manchester yesterday and
while specialists insist that the results are open to interpretation,
Sportsmail has learned that Old Trafford officials believe their £30million
striker has no chance of playing in the first three games of the World Cup.

In fact, they anticipate it will be another two weeks before he can even kick a
ball in training.

Sir Alex Ferguson has no desire to see his best player put at any risk in
Germany this summer and the verdict of United's medical experts yesterday has
all but convinced the Old Trafford manager that it would be wiser to keep the
20-year-old at home.

That, however, is unlikely to be a view shared by the FA, when Sven Goran
Eriksson has already said he would take Rooney along even if the governing
body's own medical experts tell the England coach he would only be fit to play
in the final.

Soho Square officials are keen to maintain good relations with United, so much
so that they chose not to have anyone in attendance at yesterday's scan, which
took just under half an hour at the exclusive BUPA medical clinic at Whalley
Range, Manchester.

But they are prepared to bring into use the powers they have under FIFA rules
if they feel it is necessary.

Eriksson said last night: "We still don't know the results of the scan and I
don't think Manchester United know.

"There is nothing new on Rooney. We will know the answers tomorrow.

"I haven't spoken to Rooney yet, but we are just waiting for the specialist."

'There is no way we can be hoodwinked on this'

Concern grew at the FA earlier this week when it emerged that Ferguson had
dismissed Rooney's doctor, Mike Stone, in the wake of what is now believed to
have been a row over the handling of the young striker's recuperation.

Dr Stone had served United for 10 years and was well-liked by Rooney and the
rest of the United squad, but Ferguson was not impressed by the positive
messages being conveyed to the FA.

United continue to insist Stone was sacked for "non-football related issues".

Sources, however, claim otherwise. Stone has been replaced temporarily by Tony
Gill, and while the FA hope relations between Gill and their doctor, Leif
Sward, will be as healthy as they were between Sward and Stone, they will act
if they start to feel that United are being obstructive.

Not only could the FA demand to see the scans for themselves but, under FIFA
rules, they could order another scan with their own doctors.

As one FA insider said last night: "There is no way we can be hoodwinked on
this."

Eriksson said: "United have taken their decision, but I suppose they are
extremely well covered in that area. I don't know if I will speak to Sir Alex
about the situation — let's wait and see."

If it becomes necessary, Rooney is prepared to tell Ferguson that he is
desperate to go to the World Cup.

The decision, ultimately, lies with the FA, even if Ferguson believes he should
have the final say, but Rooney is already extremely unhappy with the sudden
dismissal of a doctor he had grown to trust.

Last night it was suggested there had been contact between Stone and Rooney
since the doctor's sacking.'

'Rooney had a CT scan at Fazakerley Hospital in Liverpool early yesterday
morning and, after a fitness session, travelled to a hospital in Manchester for
an MRI scan.

He was pleased with the outcome, although Ferguson and his medical team will
discuss the results in detail before deciding whether to give Rooney their
blessing to travel with his England colleagues.

Whatever Ferguson's views, from tomorrow England will be entitled to take
control of the player's rehabilitation.

Progress as he recovers from the breaks in his right foot is said to be
encouraging, leaving him ready to step up training in two weeks, around the
time England play the first match of the finals against Paraguay.

CT scans create an image from different angles around the body. The information
is processed by computer to show a cross-section of body tissue. The MRI scan
creates a picture of almost all the tissue in the body.

Both scans were to check the extent of the healing process, and also to ensure
bone was knitting properly.

Confirmation that all is going well would allow Eriksson to meet a FIFA
deadline for naming his final squad.

Once the deadline passes on Tuesday he can only change personnel if a player
breaks down through injury.

Ferguson was due to go on holiday this week, but delayed his departure to
oversee the treatment of Rooney.

United have set a strict rehabilitation programme for their star player, which
will not allow him to kick a ball or do any contact work until June 12 at the
earliest.

England will be training next week at United's Carrington complex and Rooney
will continue to be treated by the club physios, with the England backroom
staff allowed contact with the player while he is at the training ground.

The striker could start some light jogging at the beginning of next week, but
will do nothing more strenuous as United protect their prized asset.'

The Wrexham-born youngster is qualified to play for either Wales or England,

The Danish Midfielder/Striker scored 1 goal in 14 appearences for Walsall

Timm has continually been linked with a move to Championship side Ipswich Town,

“I know from personal experience what a nightmare it can be if you try to play
injured. At the end of United’s Double-winning season in 1994, I should have
had an ankle operation. But I carried on until November of the next season,
knowing the ankle wasn’t right. By then it was too late. I ruptured it again
when I came back and I was never the same player. You have to fear the same
sort of thing for Wayne. Rooney is always involved physically and would always
be likely to have a knock. So of course Sir Alex is right to hold him back. He
has Manchester United’s and the player’s best interests at heart. He knows
there is a good chance of aggravating the injury. That could put him out of the
start of next season and possibly longer. Even if the England medics say Rooney
is fit, you can never tell until you have played a match. So Sven Goran
Eriksson would be better off picking another striker in Rooney’s place. At best
he would probably be 50 per cent match fit."

[19] United in Chelsea/Mikel deal?
---------------------------------
Posted Friday, May 26, 2006 by ed:
from SUN

'MANCHESTER UNITED have allowed John Obi Mikel to join Chelsea — as long as
they steer clear of Ruud van Nistelrooy.

United hope they now have a gentleman’s agreement with the champions not to
sign the Dutch ace.

Chief executive Peter Kenyon has had preliminary talks with Van Nistelrooy’s
agent over a switch from Old Trafford to Stamford Bridge.

But Alex Ferguson is determined to sell the striker abroad rather than to his
biggest title rivals.

United have finally accepted defeat over Mikel but told Chelsea they do not
expect them to start a fight over Van Nistelrooy.

United have been in a long tussle with Chelsea over Nigerian midfielder Mikel.

The 18-year-old initially signed for United but then claimed he was forced into
doing it and really wanted to go to Chelsea.

United refused to budge even appealing to FIFA and UEFA over the situation.

Now they have come to an agreement where Chelsea will pay United £10million and
his Norwegian club Lyn Oslo £2m.'

[17] David Nugent on his quick return from Rooney injury
---------------------------------
Posted Friday, May 26, 2006 by ed:
“Wayne’s road to recovery has been remarkably similar to mine. The doctors
originally told me I’d be out for eight to 12 weeks — but I was back in just
over SIX. So my message to Wayne would be: Don’t give up hope. I’ve shown it’s
possible to recover from this type of injury quicker than you’d expect — and
the whole country wants to see you at the World Cup. The surgeon basically told
me, ‘That’s it — you’re healed!’ And that was just FOUR WEEKS after I’d been
hurt. I went back for another scan a week later and he said I could start
kicking a ball again. I was more afraid about pushing things too fast and maybe
suffering a setback than my doctor was! He said because I was young the bone
growth was considerable and that would make it stronger. It should be the same
with Wayne because we’re practically the same age. I had a couple of kickabouts
in the sixth week and a couple of days later I tried volleying the ball. I had
my first full training session two days before my comeback game and I haven’t
looked back since. We’re both from Liverpool and we’re both young and strong,
so there’s no reason Wayne can’t recover as quickly as I did. If Wayne follows
my example — and I’m sure he will — you’d have to say there must be something
in the Liverpool air that makes us quick healers! I’ve known Wayne since I was
about 11 years old and he was 10. I was on Liverpool’s books for seven years as
a kid when he was at Everton and we played against each other. We came from
different sides of the Mersey divide but we got to know each other and there
was a fair bit of mutual respect. Even then he was an exceptional talent. He
was playing for the Under-18s when he was 14 and you could see from the tricks
he pulled off that there was something special about him. He has become a truly
great player and I really hope he will be able to play flat-out in the World
Cup finals. As an Englishman, I want us to win it and having Wayne fit would
give us a great boost.”

[16] United could sue?
---------------------------------
Posted Friday, May 26, 2006 by ed:
from SUN

'MANCHESTER UNITED are ready to SUE the FA if Wayne Rooney returns crocked from
the World Cup.

Old Trafford bosses are set to give Roo the go-ahead to team up with England
for the finals.

But they will try to take the FA to the cleaners if they think their star
striker’s recovery is mishandled in Germany.

They fear Rooney could return home after the tournament with his metatarsal in
bad shape.

And if that forces him to miss the start of next season, United would demand
that the FA cover Rooney’s £55,000-a-week wages for however long he is
sidelined.

An FA source confirmed: “The bosses at Soho Square are terrified Man U will
take action by suing if Rooney returns injured.”

United are already backing a case in Belgium which could change the face of
football.

Charleroi are suing FIFA for compensation after midfielder Abdelmajid Oulmers
was left KO’d for eight months having sustained an injury while playing for
Morocco.

Should Charleroi win, clubs would be paid greater compensation every time their
players are hurt on international duty.

Rooney, 20, busted his right foot at Chelsea on April 29. But he now seems
likely to get the all-clear to travel to Germany after undergoing a scan
yesterday.'

Posted Friday, May 26, 2006 by ed:
'WAYNE ROONEY offered to help Mike Stone get his job back after the doc was
axed by Alex Ferguson.

Stone had been treating Rooney’s broken foot when he received an angry call
from Manchester United boss Fergie.

The medic went to see him and was axed with Ferguson citing his extra work away
from the club.

England star Rooney was furious when Stone returned and told him what happened.
And the striker asked the doctor what he could do to help.

Stone told Rooney not to get involved but he is now preparing to sue United for
wrongful dismissal, while Southampton have offered him work.

Stone, who had been at Old Trafford for 10 years, believes Ferguson’s excuse is
just a smoke-screen.

The doctor checked with United chief executive David Gill if it was OK to
continue with his extra work.

Gill gave it the all-clear and was also stunned when he found out Stone had
been dismissed. Ferguson is understood to have been angry about the conflicting
reports coming out of United about Rooney’s fitness ahead of the World Cup.

Stone told England’s staff that Rooney’s metatarsal was recovering well while
Fergie poured scorn over the player’s chances. The doctor has received messages
of support from United players and former midfielder Roy Keane.'

Posted Friday, May 26, 2006 by ed:
'WAYNE ROONEY has told Alex Ferguson ’I’m fit and ready to go to the World Cup.’

The England superstar had a vital scan on his broken foot in Manchester
yesterday. And his message is — ‘I can make it’

Rooney spent just under 30 minutes having his scan at the exclusive Whalley
Range clinic and the test showed there had been an encouraging improvement to
his metatarsal injury.

But England boss Sven Goran Eriksson was kept totally in the dark about the
result.

That will be made public around lunchtime today — and now the Manchester United
striker does not want his club boss to stand in his way.

Ferguson is determined to stamp United’s authority on proceedings. And United
are ready to sue the FA should Rooney return crocked from Germany.

But Eriksson will play hardball against any attempts by United to find anything
they can use to pull the strike ace from the squad.

England’s backroom staff are also becoming increasingly frustrated over reports
that Rooney has no chance of making it to the World Cup.

The rules are in England’s favour, however, with Eriksson within his rights to
INSIST on the player joining the squad — and he will be backed all the way by
FIFA.'

[10] Indy on Rooney scan
---------------------------------
Posted Friday, May 26, 2006 by ed:
'Wayne Rooney is to undergo further examination next week after yesterday's
highly anticipated scan on his broken metatarsal proved inconclusive.

The outcome merely prolongs the agony for the England striker and his coach,
Sven Goran Eriksson, who is desperate to take him to the World Cup which starts
in a fortnight. The results will be studied over the coming days at Manchester
United before they decide the next move.

The Old Trafford club are also to send a member of their medical staff with
Rooney to the World Cup should he make it. Their prize asset will be
accompanied by either Tony Gill, the assistant club doctor, or Rob Swire, the
head physiotherapist, throughout the tournament so that his fitness can be
constantly monitored.

The 20-year-old spent just under half an hour at the exclusive Bupa medical
clinic at Whalley Range in Manchester yesterday morning having the scan that it
was hoped would determine whether he would make Eriksson's 23-man squad for
Germany.

Rooney evaded the mass of cameras, assisted by his agent, Paul Stretford, who
turned up at the front of the clinic in a decoy grey Chrysler people carrier
while the striker nipped in by the back door, and did the same as he dashed
back out again.

He must now stand back as Manchester United take charge of assessing the scan
results before releasing the verdict, which, barring leaks, is expected to come
at some stage before lunchtime today but is not expected to be a definitive
"yes" or "no".

It was supposed to be a big day for Rooney, Eriksson and the supporters with
the future of England's best player in the balance, but will simply lead to
more speculation and guesswork. Eriksson seems determined to select Rooney for
his squad if there is any chance at all of him being fit, even if it is only
for the knock-out stages. However, that view is countered by the opinion of the
Manchester United manager, Sir Alex Ferguson, who is adamant that it would be
an act of folly to take Rooney to Germany if he was less than 100 per cent fit.

Ferguson's fear is that, once in Germany, Eriksson could be pressured into
playing Rooney, particularly if early results go against England. That explains
his decision to send a member of the club's medical staff to Germany to make
sure that this does not happen.

Even when the break has healed, Rooney's foot will need more time to be robust
enough to withstand a strong tackle. Rooney, who has had an outstanding season
for United and England, also needs to get back to full match fitness.

The United manager has said he will do everything in his power to ensure Rooney
makes the England squad, but Ferguson also believes that, given that the
striker suffered the injury only late last month his chances of being fully fit
are just about non-existent.'

[9] Sportinglife on Mikel
---------------------------------
Posted Friday, May 26, 2006 by ed:
'Manchester United are remaining tight-lipped over reports that they have
agreed a compensation package with Chelsea to end their tug-of-war for Nigerian
wonderkid John Obi Mikel.

Reports on Thursday suggested that the transfer saga, which has dragged on for
over a year, is at an end after the London club agreed to pay United £10m and
Mikel's club Lyn Oslo £2m, for his services.

But a United spokesman told Manchester Evening News Sport that the Reds were
maintaining silence on the matter.

World governing body Fifa instructed all three clubs involved in the transfer
saga not to comment until they had completed an investigation.

Mikel, who was playing for Lyn and was 18 at the time, signed a deal with the
Reds on April 29 last year, only to disappear from his home, re-surface in
London and say that he had been duped into signing for United and wanted to
join Chelsea instead.

That led to a web of intrigue, with hints of death threats to Mikel and his
parents in Nigeria, four men all claiming they were Mikel's agent, and a trail
of deceit which led from Europe to Africa and back.

As far as United are concerned, the matter is still in the hands of Fifa. But
manager Sir Alex Ferguson has called for stiff penalties to be handed out over
the matter if Chelsea are found to have been in the wrong.'
