Sources in Spain confirmed last night that Torres, 22, is bound for Old Trafford next year after Atletico slashed his buy-out clause from 90million euros to 40m. In return for Torres signing an extra year's deal, Atletico agreed to substantially mark down the buy-out clause - effectively giving United the green light to wrap up a deal early next year. Even though Madrid ideally want around £28m for the hitman, it is thought United may get him for about £22m after the youngster agreed to give the Spanish club one more season. Although Chelsea and Arsenal want the striker, Torres has privately told close friends he's only interested in going to Old Trafford. A source close to the player said last night: "Ideally, Fernando would like to move in January but he realises that is unlikely now so he will wait until the summer. --------------------------------- [11] Silva on the 2 R's --------------------------------- Posted Sunday, September 17, 2006 by tb: "Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo are world-class players who can change a game. If Rooney comes into my areas of the field then he must prepare for a battle. But he is a player who never gives up and will fight for everything. "We need to be aware of what is going on with Rooney all the time because he can hurt us. --------------------------------- [10] Silva on today --------------------------------- Posted Sunday, September 17, 2006 by tb: "I know this is a massive game - they don't come much bigger. "We need to go there to win. We cannot wait for them to come and kill us. We have to play this game like it is a final. We cannot afford to lose because we will be 13 points behind. "This is the worst start to a season since I've been here, but beating United will lift the players. It is a tough game and we need to be strong. "If we play at the level we all know we can against United our jobs will become, not easy, but not as hard." "But are used to the atmosphere at Old Trafford and there is nothing for us to fear. "The atmosphere is good and I am always excited to play their. The adrenalin is pumping in a game like this because you know how much it means. "We need to attack Manchester United and when we lose the ball defend in numbers. "Then when we have the ball we need to try to play naturally and push forward and pressure them. "If we concentrate on the final third a little more then we will start to win games." --------------------------------- [9] Fletcher on life at Utd --------------------------------- Posted Sunday, September 17, 2006 by tb: "It's a squad game and the manager will pick whatever team he thinks will beat Arsenal. If you're not playing, you won't be happy, but it's a team game and we all know that at Manchester United." "Criticism's part of football and you have to try to learn from it and progress as a footballer. Each week you try to get better. I'm still young, learning the game and I'm under no illusions about that. You have to be mentally strong to play for Manchester United, that's part of it, the pressures of playing for a club like this, pressures of performing in the Champions' League and pressure to win the Premiership. If you can't handle it, I'm sure the manager wouldn't have you." --------------------------------- [8] Fletcher on today --------------------------------- Posted Sunday, September 17, 2006 by tb: "They had a great result out in Germany so they'll take confidence from that. They're looking to get their League form up and we're looking to maintain ours." --------------------------------- [7] Bung programme latest --------------------------------- Posted Sunday, September 17, 2006 by tb: >From the Observer: http://football.guardian.co.uk/News_Story/0,,1874554,00.html http://football.guardian.co.uk/News_Story/0,,1874554,00.html The BBC's flagship current affairs programme has declared it will stand firm in the face of threatened legal action before the broadcast of an investigation into football agents and managers. A key interviewee has threatened to sue if, as Panorama intends, it uses his interview in Football's Dirty Secrets, to be screened on Tuesday. The interviewee has attacked Panorama for using 'undercover' tactics to infiltrate the hidden world of football transfers. The programme threatens to send shockwaves across the soccer world, which has long been dogged by allegations of a 'bung culture'. In advance of the broadcast, the corporation has written to a number of high-profile individuals, some involved at the top levels of the game, asking them to respond to the allegations, which include corruption and dishonesty. The timing of the programme is significant. It will be broadcast shortly before the findings of an official inquiry into transfer dealings which has been conducted by the former Metropolitan police commissioner, Lord Stevens, on behalf of the Premier League. One man who has received a letter from Panorama is Kevin Bond, the assistant manager at Newcastle United, who spent last week consulting his lawyers and did not travel to the club's Uefa cup tie in Estonia on Thursday. Others include Portsmouth's manager, Harry Redknapp, and Peter Harrison, a football agent who was allegedly promised £1.8m for his help in launching a fake agency the programme had set up. All strongly deny any wrongdoing. Yesterday Redknapp went as far as to advise Portsmouth supporters to watch the programme, insisting: 'I am one million per cent innocent. It will be a very interesting programme, I'm looking forward to it very much, but I won't see it,' he said. 'I will be up in Mansfield with the team for a Cup tie.' Graham Bean, former head of the Football Association's compliance operation, who was interviewed for the programme, says he was under the impression Panorama was making a documentary about the Stevens inquiry. His lawyers have now requested any footage featuring him is edited out of the final programme, after Bean expressed concerns about Panorama's methods in obtaining the interview. The programme's producers hired a former German footballer, Knut Aufdemberge, who works as a scout for British premiership clubs, to pose as a middleman for a purportedly wealthy US investor wanting to set up Dynamic Soccer, a 'super agency' representing the biggest names in the game. Over six months, Aufdemberge was introduced to agents and managers on the recommendation of Harrison. But the American businessman was really an undercover BBC reporter. 'I'm upset they conducted an undercover sting operation,' Bean said. 'I wasn't aware that this was going to be in the programme and, if they had told me about it, I would have probably changed my mind. I don't agree with that type of journalism.' Ironically, one of those introduced to the bogus businessman was Athole Still, Sven Goran Eriksson's adviser. Still and Eriksson were duped by an undercover News of the World expose which embarrassed the former England manager when he was recorded speaking to the paper's 'fake sheik' in disparaging terms about England players. Bean, who acts as an adviser to a number of top clubs, including Manchester United, said there was nothing controversial in what he had said in the interview. But he said he was angry at the methods employed by the producers and wanted nothing more to do with them. 'The bottom line is, if they decide to include me, they will have to take the risk of what happens next,' he said. A BBC spokesman declined to comment on Bean's allegations but said the programme's makers intended it would go out in its original form. 'I can confirm we have received correspondence,' the spokesman said. 'The programme will be going out on Tuesday as planned.' Undercover investigations can be a valuable and highly effective form of journalism. Panorama's methods are thought to have gained the programme unprecedented access to an issue that has long cast a shadow over the game. Mike Newell, the manager of Luton Town, who has made a series of damning allegations about agents offering 'bungs' and has been interviewed for the programme, has said he believes corruption within the game will be exposed by the Stevens inquiry. 'If there was nothing to be found, Lord Stevens would have said so by now and called it to a halt,' he said in an interview last week. 'I would be amazed if they don't find anything.' --------------------------------- [6] Free matched £40 bet offer! --------------------------------- Posted Sunday, September 17, 2006 by tb: World Matchplay To celebrate the World Matchplay and the Ayr Gold Cup, totesport.com are launching their Free £40 bet* offer from Saturday 16th to Sunday 17th September. 'But it was a total shock. I would be lying if I said I wasn't disappointed. It's a terrible feeling not playing for England after 10 years. 'McClaren has made a decision. It's not bitterness I feel, it's more disappointment and hurt. It's hard to take when the reasoning behind it was to move on: I believe I have two or three more good years left. I thought I could move on with the team and not get left behind, but now I have a burning desire to prove him wrong.' 'He said with moving on there come casualties and "you are one of the casualties". That was it really.' 'I didn't announce my international retirement because I want to play for England again,' he said. 'I still want to reach that milestone of playing for England 100 times. It's a target I set myself a long time ago and I won't give up now.' --------------------------------- [4] Collins: Louis will be a star for us --------------------------------- Posted Sunday, September 17, 2006 by tb: With the quality around him he is going to get a lot of chances and it will be disappointing if he doesn't score more than 20 goals this season. He has all the tools required to be a star over the next five or six years for Manchester United. Louis signed for Fulham in the same week as me in 2000 when Jean Tigana was manager and you could see straight away he was an exceptional talent with God-given gifts of pace and raw power. Everybody realised we had a special player on our hands if he kept progressing. I think he scored on his league debut for Fulham and, if I remember right, I put him through for that goal. He is a striker that midfielders love because he can take the ball to feet or run on to passes over the top with his pace. With two good feet he is also a centre-half's nightmare because he can go both ways. If a player has a weaker side, defenders will try to force them that way, but you can't do that with Louis. He also has a terrific leap and probably should score more with his head. If I was coaching him I would work on getting him into the box and getting headers. He is happy to work hard on his game because at Fulham he was always staying behind and practising his shooting and finishing. Because I speak French I tried to help Louis and all the French players at Fulham, maybe by passing on a message to a team-mate or with the dressing-room banter. But Louis worked hard at learning English and it always seemed to me a matter of time before a really big Premiership club came in for him. Now he has to be consistent at Manchester United. He can't have one fantastic game and then two quiet ones. He needs to follow up his performance against Celtic in the Champions League with a similar one tomorrow against Arsenal in the Premiership. --------------------------------- [3] Collins: Louis sometimes lacks self belief --------------------------------- Posted Sunday, September 17, 2006 by tb: Louis looked supremely confident in midweek against Celtic. You could sense he felt part of the United team, not just a bit-part player but the main striker. He has not had an easy time at Old Trafford with injuries and probably feeling in the shadow of Ruud van Nistelrooy, and I think it's the best thing for him that Van Nistelrooy has been sold. If Louis lacks anything it's great self-belief, and being classed as the main striker there for the first time will give him the extra confidence he needs. Sometimes he can doubt himself a little bit. I wouldn't say he is shy, but he is not the outgoing character people might expect and he gets on with his business in quite a quiet fashion. Louis is not one whose biggest asset is coming on and changing games. He needs a run of matches to have self-belief, and he is a full part of the starting XI at United now. There is pressure on him to score the goals Van Nistelrooy did, but there's pressure on a striker at any big club and Louis can live with that. He scored two against Celtic and could have had five. Sometimes he doesn't take the percentage of chances you might expect, but there's room for improvement in everybody. I think he might agree he should score more, but he gets in so many goalscoring positions, particularly with his pace. --------------------------------- [2] John Collins on us checking out Louis --------------------------------- Posted Sunday, September 17, 2006 by tb: >From the Guardian: http://football.guardian.co.uk/comment/story/0,,1873780,00.html http://football.guardian.co.uk/comment/story/0,,1873780,00.html Watching Louis Saha's excellent performance against Celtic on Wednesday reminded me of the player I knew from our three years together at Fulham. The first time I saw Louis on the training pitch it was obvious he had all the attributes to go to the very top and I'm delighted he is getting a real chance to show it this season at Manchester United. When United were considering signing Louis I got regular calls from Martin Ferguson, Sir Alex's brother and United's chief scout, to ask me about him and I said he was made for a big club. Martin wanted information about Louis's personality and character. I found Louis a very good professional, very polite and a joy to be around. He was well liked in the dressing room at Fulham and basically a manager's dream. --------------------------------- [1] Hargreaves confirms his broken leg --------------------------------- Posted Sunday, September 17, 2006 by tb: "It got X-rayed and it was revealed the left fibula was broken." "I need to wear a plaster for three weeks, then we have to wait and see how the recovery goes." "That's the way it is in football." "Sometimes you are flying high and all of a sudden you are down again." --------------------------------- [14] Jan deal off now? --------------------------------- Posted Saturday, September 16, 2006 by ed: Hargreaves broke his leg tonight for Bayern, BBC repoprting it as a 'serious' break. --------------------------------- [13] Giggsy on injury --------------------------------- Posted Saturday, September 16, 2006 by tb: "It is frustrating for me, because I have really enjoyed the first part of the season and I just wanted to keep it going." "But you can't just moan about it: I have to start to get myself fit. "Others will get their chance now. The manager always stresses the importance of a big squad and we are going to have to use it now. We have the squad to deal, with such injuries but we don't want any more. "It's a massive game whenever Arsenal play United, but it's especially big for us this time as we have got off to such a good start," --------------------------------- [12] Ronaldo on Winning the Champions League --------------------------------- Posted Saturday, September 16, 2006 by tb: "Why not?" "This is a big club. Every year we have the chance to win it and hopefully this time we will. "What happened last season is in the past. You have to think about the moment. We are doing very well just now and we have to keep it going." --------------------------------- [11] Ronaldo on Sunday --------------------------------- Posted Saturday, September 16, 2006 by tb: "I love to play big games and this is one more." "Arsenal is a classic game. You never know who is going to win these games. Maybe Arsenal haven't started very well, but in the classics, you never know. They are still a great team but we have to think about ourselves and at the moment it is good for us. "They have young players who are working well for the team and I think they have the same qualities as those who've left the club like Vieira, Bergkamp, Cole and Pires." --------------------------------- [10] Fergie backs Wenger shocker --------------------------------- Posted Saturday, September 16, 2006 by tb: "The transfer of Ashley Cole was the biggest certainty of all time." "Selling him was the sensible thing to do and, if ever an exchange was obvious, the arrival of William Gallas made sense too. "It was clear that when they decided to let Sol Campbell go that they had someone in mind to replace him. "Now the dust is settling after so much turmoil and I am sure Arsene Wenger will be delighted to be able to concentrate on his team instead of having to spend time and energy on off-field stuff." --------------------------------- [9] Darren on the Arse --------------------------------- Posted Saturday, September 16, 2006 by tb: "It is far too early to say they would be out of the title race." "They are a top-class side who are certainly capable of going on a long winning run to claw some points back. "I have watched all Arsenal's games so far and don't think they have been doing that badly. "They might have been overplaying at times, which must be a bit of a worry, but they are still capable of cutting any opposition defence open. "The criticism they are receiving is probably a little bit unfair and we will treat them in exactly the same manner as we have done in the past." --------------------------------- [8] Ole: No thoughts of retirement --------------------------------- Posted Saturday, September 16, 2006 by tb: "I can believe it is happening because I set realistic targets along the way." "With the patience the manager, the players and the staff have shown me, it was just a matter of time before I reached them. "I certainly never felt the urge to retire. Obviously, when you are injured for so long, you have some dark days but I always I had the belief I could get back to contributing to the squad. "That is what I hope to do this season." --------------------------------- [7] Ole: Wednesday was pay back time --------------------------------- Posted Saturday, September 16, 2006 by tb: "The feeling when the ball went in was just fantastic." "I am not a believer in making up for lost time but I do think I need to pay the fans back. "They have sung my name so many times when I have been sat in the stand it has become a little embarrassing. It is so nice to be back on the pitch again and to score in front of the Stretford End is particularly special." --------------------------------- [6] Roy has a dig at Fergie --------------------------------- Posted Saturday, September 16, 2006 by tb: "I was seeing players doing stuff off the pitch - had the feeling it was affecting them - and it came to a head with that defeat (against the smoggies). "Yes, I nailed certain people. I took the publicity with a pinch of salt, senior figures at the club should've done the same. "In the end, the manager was swayed by certain people he works with." --------------------------------- [5] Roy on Wayne --------------------------------- Posted Saturday, September 16, 2006 by tb: "For me, the jury's still out on Wayne." "I think he's got a hell of a lot to do. "Wayne has achieved nothing - and would probably say that himself. "I would judge players over a few years rather than one or two." "He's got potential, like I've got potential to be a good manager. Potential is one thing, doing it is another." --------------------------------- [4] Fergie on control --------------------------------- Posted Saturday, September 16, 2006 by tb: "At a club like this, the enthusiasm never dims." "I am lucky I have United as a kind of anchor. "I can't be part-time here or take it easy. It is such a big club, if you weren't in control, if you weren't seen to be there all the time, I think it could wobble a bit." --------------------------------- [3] Fergie on retirement --------------------------------- Posted Saturday, September 16, 2006 by tb: "Retirement? You must be joking, especially when you consider that the alternative is to stay home with that wife of mine." "Cathy says if I retire, she is heading back to Glasgow." --------------------------------- [2] New Red News out tomorrow! --------------------------------- Posted Saturday, September 16, 2006 by ed: Check http://www.rednews.co.uk to view the image which has been removed from plain text email version of news RN 128. It's just the beginning of the season, I know the teams behind that if they lose they start being in a difficult position but I think all the four teams are better than last season with better players. I think any of the four teams can be better and I don't believe after Sunday the loser will say it's over and don't have any more chance. I'm not praying or waiting for a Manchester United mistake. I am waiting for my team to improve and improve by working and working and working." --------------------------------- [53] SKY on Fergie press conference --------------------------------- Posted Friday, September 15, 2006 by ed: 'Sir Alex Ferguson is expecting Wayne Rooney to burst onto the scene against Arsenal on Sunday. The England star looked sluggish upon his return from suspension in midweek, with his performance against Celtic in the UEFA Champions League raising a few eyebrows. Rooney's outing against The Bhoys was his first competitive action for a month and he has had little playing time since England slipped out of the World Cup, having been sent off at the Amsterdam Tournament. Ferguson claims it is understandable that the forward will be a little ring-rusty, but is expecting an improvement against old rivals Arsenal. "Wayne Rooney will be better for this game," Ferguson said on Sky Sports News. "Over the last four months, he played one game for England and was sent off against Porto after an hour. "He is no different to any other human being in this world who plays football, he needs games and he will be far better on Sunday." Louis Saha has taken on the striking mantle in Rooney's absence and Ferguson is thrilled with the form of the Frenchman and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. "The lad is benefiting from playing all the time," said the Scot. "He has everything in his game and we are enjoying it because the boy has come on all the time. "Ole showed on Wednesday what he is made of. He has fantastic goal sense." Rooney is likely to have his temperament tested to the full on Sunday, as Ferguson is expecting a typically feisty encounter. "It is going to be a feisty match, competitive, it always is, but there will be some terrific footballers on the pitch so it should be a really good game," said the Scot. Arsenal have had a poor start to the season and Ferguson is aware that victory for his side could place The Gunners in a tough situation in The Premiership. "They have a game in hand and we had a similar situation two years ago when they came with their unbeaten record," noted the Scot. "If we had lost that we would have been 13 points behind them, so we are not looking too deeply into that. "We are interested in the situation regarding their form. "There is another interesting game in London (Chelsea v Liverpool) and with the top four meeting so early in the season, it does have extra significance. I am happy with the form of the team." Ferguson has lost Ryan Giggs and Park Ji-sung to injury, but he feels he has the quality in his ranks to cope. "Ryan has had his scan and is going to be out for three weeks to a month, Ji-sung had an operation on Thursday and is out for three months," said Ferguson. "It is a blow and is something we have to cope with, but our depth of squad can allow us to handle that. "We have Paul back, Wayne back and Cristiano back and that gives us a boost. "We are more than capable in the middle of the park to deal with things." --------------------------------- [52] Fergie on Rooney --------------------------------- Posted Friday, September 15, 2006 by ed: "Wayne is no different to any other player on this planet. He needs games. When you look back over the last four months, he had one full game for England, then got sent off against Portugal, sent off for us against Porto and played in the opening game against Fulham. He has not played since but I am sure he will be better on Sunday. I have never come across a player as good at coming off the bench as Ole in all my time as a manager. Maybe it is his temperament or nature. I know he watches the game all the time and he concentrates on what is happening. That gives him an advantage. He showed exactly what he is made of on Wednesday. People will look at his goal and say it was a tap-in but it was only so simple because of his movement when Louis Saha went for the second shot." --------------------------------- [51] Fergie reflects --------------------------------- Posted Friday, September 15, 2006 by ed: "Roy Keane against Patrick Vieira was an incredible competition between two titans of the game. It was a great competition for years. I used to enjoy it and I think both players enjoyed it too. Historically, our matches against Arsenal have always been feisty. When you have clubs with such great histories, who have been competing against each other for titles for so long, I don't think you can avoid that. What you want is to make sure the games are being played fairly. There is extra significance this weekend because the top four are meeting each other but I don't think we can underestimate Arsenal. They are in a transitional period because they have lost big names like Vieira, Dennis Bergkamp, Robert Pires and Ashley Cole. We have been in the same situation. You just have to be patient and wait until the younger ones reach the next stage of their development. I don't know why their form has not been good but I do know we will have to play to the best of our capabilities to beat them, there is no question about that." --------------------------------- [50] Wenger on United --------------------------------- Posted Friday, September 15, 2006 by ed: "It's too early for me to say they will be the favourites for the championship. The only thing you could say is they have a good team, they've had a good start and those are always good ingredients to have a good season. But after four games it is too early. You need eight to 10 games to see what is the real strength of the team. If you lose, you are always three points further behind than you were before the game. Don't forget as well that we have a game in hand. We do not go there to lose, we go there to win, and I am confident we have a good chance to do it. Let's focus on us and play at our best level and continue to do what we do and try to improve our defensive record. Then we have a good chance against Man Utd.The teams that played against us so far in the championship refused to play and we made it even more difficult for ourselves by being 1-0 down. Then we need to be not only sharper and better but also a bit lucky. I feel it will come anyway and there is so much quality in our side, they will make the difference." var uri = 'http://impgb.tradedoubler.com/imp/img/512755/608750?' + new String (Math.random()).substring (2, 11);document.write(' http://clkuk.tradedoubler.com/click?p=19134&a=608750&g=512755 Check http://www.rednews.co.uk to view the image which has been removed from plain text email version of news '); --------------------------------- [49] Free £30 betting offer --------------------------------- Posted Friday, September 15, 2006 by ed: Sportingodds.com have come up with a number of fantastic markets for the Live Premiership Double-Header on Sunday.
