recently ran into a problem with a client of ours running on a dual
p2-450 w/256mb of ram. everyone will be chugging along just fine then
after a while the users will get an error saying that there are "Too
many open files in system". it doesnt seem as though there are any
process running wild. although the mem seems to be mostly used up.
this is the output that i recieved when i just tried to do a ps and an
ls:

[root@lyon1 kernel]# ps ax
bash: /bin/ps: Too many open files in system
[root@lyon1 kernel]# ls
bash: /bin/ls: Too many open files in system

any ideas?
