I couldn't build the egcs rpm either, though it builds properly from 
tarballs (after I installed the missing built tool).

>From tarballs, I can build both for i686 targets. For my purposes, I think 
I'll stick with the tarballs; I just discovered a program I want that does 
not compile with either egcs or gcc 2.95;-(

Using tarballs I can easily control where they get installed - 
/tmp/summer/usr works well;-)
