Actually, while DOS has the 500mb limitation, Linux doesn't. You may need
to use some bootprompt arguments to get Linux to see all of the drive if
the drive is bigger than 2gb (see the Bootprompt Howto), but even with old
hardware like that Linux has no problem. 

Exception: The boot partition needs to be entirely below the 500mb limit
(since the BIOS is used to boot). I always solve this by making a 5mb
/boot partition as first thing on the hard drive. Voila!
