Subject: RE: KDesktop geometry for remote access via Cygwin/XFree86

I've experimented (a little - I'm not used to interacting so directly with the X server) with both the twm and fvwm window managers I can get with cygwin.  I can start kdesktop and/or kicker (kicker is what I really want to use, much lich Doug) but the kicker bar doesn't get 'embedded', if that's the correct term in either the main window of the window manager or in the kdesktop when I start it up.

I've tried starting kdesktop and kicker directly, as well as using 'kdeinit +kcminit +kdesktop +kicker' and get pretty much the same result - kicker comes up in it's own framed window that isn't well integrated into the environment (desktop/x window).

Is there a neat trick to 'dock', park or otherwise cause the kicker window to come up without a frame and positioned at the bottom of either the kdesktop or fvwm main window?

Here is the problem I think you are going to run into. Not only are you going to have probmes seeing the menu but if you minimize the desktop (which you should be able to do in your scenario) and then max it back up your start bar will now be behind the desktop. This is because they are two different X programs. In KDE the start bar can be started as "kicker" and I run it seperately. I don't need the desktop for any reason since I do not have any icons populated there. It is a good way to access all of your programs. In the meantime you may be able to move (with the titlebar of the start bar - if available) the start bar up a little. As for a setup to do this automatically I will wait for other answers as well. Very good question.

Subject: KDesktop geometry for remote access via Cygwin/XFree86

I use Cygwin/XFree86 and ssh  on a Windows XP box to access a RedHat 8.0 machine remotely.  I am able to log in and start KDesktop, but I can't get access to the menu (bottom of the screen with the popup that lets me start applications).  I think the problem has to do with the title bars on both the X server window and the KDesktop window within that window - basically I'm loosing something like 42+ pixels and can't get to the menu using the mouse.

I've tried various settings for the KDesktop -geometry option but I'm shooting in the dark since I can't find the syntax for <geometry> specified anywhere.  Can anyone be of assistance?
