For the user reporting this trouble: 1. Do not ignore previous email on hdparm. If you do not have your hdparm settings right it will slow the system down. 2. The above mentioned fix does help on text processing slowdowns. Finally I have a question myself. Would it suffice to set the export LC_ALL=C export LANG=c in the /etc/profile? Or would does this need to be set in all shell scripts actively used on the box. It seems like an annoying pain in the ass to edit all Nautilus scripts for this bit.
