Sounds good... I'm a bit surprised you decided to go with the DVD, though...
after all, on a budget, why not just go with a CD? Or to add capabilities,
an inexpensive CDRW? I kind of wish I could buy that MB/CPU/Memory set,
though, as right now I'm stuck with an old Cyrix MII 300 UNDERCLOCKED to 266
(my MB doesn't support it at 300 :(). But it's the difference between
having a wife and kids and having alimony payments to an ex-wife and
kids.....

Oh, and you forgot a few more summaries on the Hard Drives
- Maxtor has great support over the Internet and Phone, especially in the US
- Fuji drives suck in home use
- Fuji drives rock in high stress environments.
- No one really likes Connor particularly much
- There are two distinct sets of folks here on the list, at least with
respect to hard drives... the "Get it cheap or don't get it at all" crowd
and the "Money is no object, so get the Gold Plated Ferrari for your daily
driver" crowd... aka "I have a wife and kids" and "I'm a bachelor" ;)

I guess that just means hard drive preferences are a matter of personal
feelings.

I've bitten the bullet & bought the hardware - well, most of it. All prices
include taxes & shipping.

FIC PA-2013, AMD K6-II 450 $161 TufShop
http://www.tufshop.com

64Mb PC100 SDRAM ECC(4x72),
ATI Express 98 8Mb,
keyboad, PS/2 3-button mouse $209 PCCost
http://www.pccost.com

Teac FDD, Bigfoot 8.4Gb HDD,
Hitachi 4x DVD $190 CompGeeks
http://www.compgeeks.com

medium ATX tower,
AOpen FM56-ITU/2 modem $ 98 Axion
http://www.axiontech.com
                                  ----
                                  $658

Still to buy:-
- monitor (CompGeeks have a 15" Hyundai)
- tape drive
- UPS <--- pref. APC cos they have a great Linux UPS-handling app
- sound card <-- SB32, pref. non-PnP; I forgot to order it

(These last few items can wait.)

I'll build the beast & post the results in a fortnight or so.

Did I miss anything? All advice is appreciated.

Hugo

P.S. Here is a summary of the Red Hat List's advice on hard drives:-
- buy IBM; it's expensive but it works
- don't buy Maxtor, it sucks
- buy Maxtor, it's great; avoid Western Digital
- Maxtor tech support sucks, esp. in Germany
- there is too much police activity on the US East coast
