Space minimization is always fun, short of switching to the single-floppy
Linux router (www.linuxrouter.org) the best thing I've found so far is the
e2compr transparent compression patches for ext2
(opensource.captech.com/e2compr/software-04x.html). You need to be able to
compile your kernel before using this (so compiling on a bigger machine and
then copying stuff over by LAN or floppy is good) but then even using
minimal compression (and no compression at all for frequently accessed
files) you can reduce your overall disk usage by 25% to 50% :)
I've never tried this for installing on a <100mb drive, but I have used it
to get a Gnome workstation  with development tools going on a 300mb drive.
