You loose:

rpm --query kernel-headers
kernel-headers-2.2.16-3

Well, all I can say is that it did not happen.  I certainly did not go there
are remove them.  If the header files weren't there, the gcc compile would
not have gotten further even after manually creating the links.

Don't know what happened.
