The diagnostic utility is one that Western Digital has on their web site. I
ran it again and this time had it write "0's" over the entire drive and then
read them, no errors were found. Since this destroyed all data I tried
loading RH6, this went off without a hitch and ran fine. So, then I tried
an upgrade to RH7. The upgrade completed ok but would boot to the logon
screen and then attempt to start "X" but has same problem. There are
sometimes errors reported during the boot process and sometimes it hangs at
various points. But, for now the "Always Happens" error is the one about
gdm already running. Could I have gotten a defective CD from Red Hat?
Seems strange that RH6 works or and RH 7 does not.
