The green colour that appears has nothing to do with a chosen back-ground colour either in Gnome or KDE. It replaces the 'normal' black screen as seen in console mode. It is activated (and not every time!)when entering X mode. The normally grey 'X' screen that appears first when entering the GUI has a slight green tinge to it. Whatever is normally black is now green.
