Give some gental taps, as this sounds like a intermittent connection problem 
in the monitor to me. 

It this causes/cures it then you have a connection that is intermintent in 
your video system some where.

Also you could have a bad degausing coil in your monitor. This causes a 
magnetic charge buildup on the screen, that throws off deflection.
If shutting it off for a few days and it goes away cures it this may be what 
it is.
