I would think as a Mandrake user some of these questions would be apparent. 
Nevertheless...
Loading RH over Mandrake would be a mistake.
Star Office and Open Office are largely compatible with MS Office, but be 
aware that many custom tweaks may not transfer.
External modems are always preferred because they are true modems and don't 
require CPU cycles to drive them, as Winmodems do. That being said, there is 
support for Winmodems in Linux but I  personally have had no luck with them. 
Then again, I haven't tried very hard either.
Most major brand printers should be supported. My Lexmark Optra E310 has a 
driver, if that tells you anything. Even if your driver isn't specified, it 
may be able to use a close proximity. Even my HPDJ932C prints in color from 
RH.
