Another reason not to like Bobby Valentine as a manager. Earlier yesterday, he said he didn't think Beckett playing golf was the smartest idea - if it were true. Later in the day he says it's no big deal, even though he didn't get a chance to talk to Beckett. Says Beckett came in early to throw and then took off.
The guy isn't genuine. You know he's biting his tongue all the time. You can hear it in his voice. But beyond that, his 'have it both ways' approach only adds to controversies like this. He's not even adept at managing the media. Francona was better. His default setting was "protect my guys," so he didn't feed into this stuff.
