If it's OK, I'd like to wait until I've got the multipass version
running, so that I can see how much improvement (if any) I get with

I haven't looked at the Xft code, but my understanding was that it uses
simple geometric coverage (a one-pixel-square box filter) with enough
precision to yield 256 levels in the final result.

That's oversimplified and possibly just wrong, so Keith, please correct
me as needed.
