| Yes, a pixel is actually three tiny rectangles :-)

In fact, pixels in traditional Invar Mask CRTs are *round*, or close to being
round. RGB dots are placed in form of triangle.
Trinitron/DiamondTron monitors have parallel "RGB lines", with each line
placed in parallel to previous line (just like in LCD displays)

The most interesting and promising technology (for CRT displays) is Slot Mask.
Current display vendors which manufature monitors with Slot Mask technology
are NEC (NEC-Mitsubishi Displays, Japan) and LG Electronics (South Korea).
You can read more details on those technologies on links below:

** from what I know about X's RENDER extension and its optimizations for LCD
displays - I assume that RENDER can be optimized for those Slot Mask displays
(NEC CromaClear, LG Flatron), too.
I think some models of those monitors have DVI connectors, so digital
interface is available and individual sub-pixel areas can be addressed.
At least I am aware that Viesonic has CRT monitors in PS series (Professional
series) with DVI connectors.

Does someone have experience with RENDER ext,. and those monitors?
Does it *work*? Or what kind of tweaking is necessary?

Advantage which I see in using such Slot Mask monitors is that they are
significantly cheaper. I think reasonable 17" display can be bought just for
USD $200. And that monitor will have 0.24mm dot pitch ("slot pitch")!..
Compare this to 0.28mm or 0.30mm for LCD displays!..

P.S. I am not associated with none of these companies. I was just selling some
of those monitors few years ago. NEC Multisync M500 was on my desk for about
2 years. And I don't remember some other CRT monitor comparable in visual
quality to it.
