OK, so the method which Andres has described did not fix this specific phone
but it has somehow worked to unbrick another one which had a different issue.
At least now I've one replicant phone that's working.
I'd like to try and work things out with the logs etc... Also the instruction
to backup the efs partition have not yielded a usable efs image as far as I'm
concerned. Is it better to open a new thread for these issues or shall we carry
on with this one?

That means that it's not related to the SIM card at all. Here the modem
isn't working at all for some reasons.

You can get the logs of the modem driver with 'adb logcat -b radio'.
The GettingLogs[1] wiki page has more details on how to do that.

If you paste logs here, in general it might be a good idea to remove
mentions of the IMEI and the traces related to it, however here the
modem most likely didn't boot, so it's most likely not able to retrieve
the IMEI.

Alternatively you could also try things similar to what Andrés
Domínguez tried.
