I think there's a CentOS live CD, that should be good to test with.
there is a live CentOS image? got a pointer? Unfortunately I don't
think

thanks. i swear i did a search before i asked, but i don't remember what i
looked for and it came up empty.. *shakes head* holiday laziness i guess.
try before you buy is much of an option. I can't just hop over to
BestBuy
to look at most of these machines.
is bestbuy one of those internet retailers? There are other vendors,
with retail outlets. If you need their service then buy from one of
those.
bestbuy is storefront w/ online presence, similar to frys, but not as
extensive. I guess my point is that most retail shops rarely carry the
nicer business laptops on display.
Naming those businesses does not inform this Australian. I've heard of
bestbuy and frys. And Lowes too. Never seen any of them.
I think, on reflection, that some vendors offer Linux (and RHEL)
preinstalled on some models of their laptops.
I did go looking around an the T61 is offered as a linux certified
laptop
from a third party with RHEL5, so I'm not sure what they do different
to
avoid these issues. I know Dell sells RHEL on its Precision series,
does
anyone else?

Ask your preferred vendor, at least that informs them of the demand.
fwiw I've bought three Intellish laptops, one new (cheap) Acer
consumer-grade and two used, a Satellite 1400 and a Thinkpad R40. All
came with Windows, but all run Linux fine.
I was going to do some checking. but lenovo.com.au does not work with
Seamonkey. IBM has a 7-day money-back guarantee on used laptops. I hoped
to find whether the same offer applies to new.
The trick here is business grade and new. that run RHEL 5 64bit.
I understand that. If someone offers a 7-day money-back guarantee on new
kit, your mind might be eased.
I've been playing with this hp still, and it hasn't repeated the issue w/
the wifi irq dropping, so *shrug* we might go with it. RHEL5.3beta runs
fairly well on it compared to 5.2.
What's the graphics?
The graphics in my HP DC7700 (sff business-grade desktop, superceded by
DC7800) is not supported by intelfb and that means no framebuffer when
running xen. framebuffer works sans xen because vesafb does it, but
vesafb cannot be built as a module.
intelfb in later (fedora) kernels is fine, I looked at copying the new
intelfb to the older kernel, but there's more stuffing around than I'm
willing to try to do.
For those wondering what I'm rattling on about, booting with "vga=794"
and similar works with a xen host if there is a framebuffer-capable
driver compiled into the kernel (the only example I know for sure works
is vesafb). Otherwise, one has to load the driver later with whatever
magic it requires. It seems most of my newer systems have intel
graphics, and intelfb is the driver. The RHEL 5.0 version of intelfb
does not support the newer intel graphics used in the DC7700.
xorg in EL5 also did not work well with this system, but since 5.2 it's
been okay.
