I was able to get Robin's program up and running on windows with
relatively little trouble. A couple points for people who aren't

When you type in the paths for flac.exe and lame.exe, be sure to use
two slashes, e.g.:
c:\\lame\\lame.exe
I'll add some examples as comments in the perl code.
Also, if you're going to use the latest version of lame (3.97b1) then
you probably want to change "--preset standard" to take advantage of
the new VBR options. I used V4 and it sounds great without filling up
my iPod.
That's on my todo list too!
The whole thing took about 25 hours to run on 4500 files, some of which
were quite large.
Yes, lame encoding is not quick.
