Thanks everyone, especially Nick for that VB script. My flirtation with AAC didn't last long. If it isn't the iTunes encoder then all bets are off and it's just so messy trying to use the iTunes encoder from other apps. Also, sometimes I like to put a few tracks onto my Sony Clie and that needs CBR MP3 so the most sensible route seems to be MP3 using the known and trusted (by me) LAME encoder.
