There is still the possibility that I'll stick with MP3 but if I do then
it'll be 128kb because space really is at a premium and it's worked well
enough on my current player (a PJB, tragically overlooked by history.
Yes, I have effectively had an "iPod" for almost exactly 6 years now.)

That Hydrogen Audio site is a source of lots of interesting info. It's
put me off the dBpowerAmp route somewhat. Even if you accept that AAC
is unconditionally better than MP3 at 128kb, effectively there is no
such thing as "AAC" or "MP3" in that neither are unique well-defined
things. I guess that it is really easy for a 128kb MP3 file created by
a state of the art encoder to sound far better than a 160kb or even
higher bit rate AAC file created by a second rate encoder. It looks to
me as if the AAC codec for dBpowerAmp is reverse engineered from the
Apple one so who knows how good it really is. I guess I need to do some
A-B testing.

I'm not seeing a good and elegant solution for AAC right now. My
"dream" solution would be to find that there is a way for Anapod to
call the native Apple/iTunes AAC encoder.

I'm beginning to think that I will end up being forced down the 128kb
MP3 route.
